Kiting in Winthrop @ Yirrell Beach

Skipper's picture

On Saturday a hand full of us went to Yirrell Beach in Winthrop (next to Deer Island) to ride. There wasn't enough wind to ride but we did run into the plover police (DCR & NE Aquarium) representative that monitors and maintains the nesting areas on Revere, Winthrop Beach and Yirrell Beach. She came off asking if we belon to a club and she knew right away that we were kitesurfers. Anyway, we had a pretty good conversation with her as there was no confrontation. However, she was concerned that "our kites have been proven to scare the plovers into abandoning the nests or prevent them from feeding" and askied us not to kite here. As I live in Revere and ride at all 3 beaches I began to talk with her about a comprimise for Yirrell Beach. I mentioned the Kiting area map that I made some time ago for Revere Beach and she mentioned she is familiar with it and finds it and excellent reference and reflection on us (kiting community) and furthermore says we are generally nice people. (let's keep it that way) So in order to be able to kite I proposed doing a similar map for kiting area on Yirrell Beach. She agreed. So I have created this map based on the negotiations I reached with her.

Yirrel Beach is on Shirley Street in Winthrop. The very beginning of Yirrell Beach has a roped off area for Plover nesting. Halfway down Shirley street the sea wall has a stair case that goes over the wall next to a porta-pottie and further up just before you hit the residences that are right on the water at is a ground level entrance to Yirrell Beach at Petrel Street (See google maps). That is where we should enter to kite at this beach as the first launch site. There is another launch next to the entrance at Deer Island Water Treatment Facility, we'll call it Launch 2. Back to Launch 1, on the wall ther will mark where kiters should stay clear of and where we can kite using a code. It will be known only to us for the purposes of this beach as guide so as not to attract attention to us in any other way. It is a code and will be obvious to kiters. As a rule of thumb at this place please keep the noise down on this beach as well as it is a residential neighborhood and we don't want to attract attention to ourselves other than that we are fun to watch.

Please look over this map and Revere Beach map as well of the kiting areas. Hope this helps.
