A Visit to Yirrell
I was at this really awesome party.
There was booze flowing like a river, a killer band and loads of fabulous people. The band front man stopped playing so that he could make an announcement.
All of a sudden one of the NY Rangers skated in and said something about the President of the United States and how he was outside and wanted to come in.
I started to panic because I didn't make enough cupcakes.
There was also something about hot air balloons and possibly a monkey... ..
And then my alarm went off.
I dragged myself to my computer to see how the wind was looking. The general consensus on the shout box was that Yirrell Beach was the place to be. I'd never been there before so I figured what the hell. I had gotten shafted at PBay earlier so I was itching to ride a bit... The only problem was I still needed to finish schoolwork. The forecast called for the wind to drop early afternoon so that actually made me feel a little better - I wouldn't be so bummed having to leave early if I knew it was not going to be spectacular later.

Yirrell is a really cute beach. Lots of soft sand and not too much seaweed. The locals seem very nice as well. There were no problems parking today but I could imagine that during the season that isn't even slightly the case. There was a nice mix of waves and some flatter water.

When I got there a kite was up and maybe two or three cars were parked. I pulled up and saw kitermike. Johnny and Patrick were already on the water. A few minutes later Jean showed up. I pumped up my 9m and played a little in the waves. The wind was kinda up and down and a few times it just crapped out. I really had no desire to pump up my 12 because I knew I was going to have to leave by noonish so I just worked it best as I could.

Soon the beach started getting populated. JohnnyD, Benny, Tyler, Kristof, Andrew and lots of other folks were pumping up like it was going out of stye.

What was interested was the vast array of equipment people were using. 9m's to 17m's, doors, surfboards, and plain old twin tips.
After a few mini-sessions on the water I had to call it quits and start wrapping it up. I forgot my towel so I applied my yoga-skills to get my top of without putting on a show. I was mildly successful:

The tied up straight-jacket looking arms are courtesy of Benny. Btw - there is a great little dinner/breakfast place on the way there - got me a yummy egg sandwich. They were super fast with my order even though the place was packed. Can't remember the name though.. But it's on a corner. You can't miss it. Anyhow that's where the little syrofoam tray thing came from.
As I was leaving more people were showing up - not sure how the rest of the day went - but I enjoyed my time there and I will totally be back!

Yeah this is kinda short - but I have to get that stupid paper done! <3

I prefer the text picture text picture format of the blog. It would be cool if people could comment on individual pictures, tag themselves... oh wait, I'm not on Facebook!
Yeah I guess if you are writing about a session its better that its a "Session Report" and if you write about the joys of being a kiter which includes kiting pictures then its a blog.
I think that I really dont care if people make sessions blogs because they are having fun. But if I make them have the pictures then why do we haves session reports
This stuff drives Jermy up the wall lol
Everyone should blog more!!! Session Reports are great but Blogs go deeper into one interpretations of their experiences. I like the text, picture, text, picture approach.. With the blog you can go off topic which makes t more fun to read!
Please all blog more!!!!!
The ocean is the great garbage conveyor. Remote beaches all over the world collect trash discarded thousands of miles away. Humans are just now learning to not use the oceans as a trash can.
I noticed this, too, more so at Nahant than at Yirrell. All the plastic bits made me think of the Chris Jordan's project documenting the countless albatrosses dying because their guts are filled with undigestable plastics. Full disclosure: the following gallery and images are a little unsettling (but I think that's the artist's intent) http://chrisjordan.com/gallery/midway/#CF000313%2018x24
Made me think about some of the talk around the time of the H4RD1NG5 situ, where someone suggested MASSkiting beach cleanup days. Might be a good way to hang out together when winds are not cooperating. I'll probably start carrying some garbage bags in my kit and haul a bit out myself each time out (time permitting), but it might give the group some good PR if we have some established, published dates. Just a thought.
I do it on my own when I can, totally in if that can be organized in group. We could take the trash to the town and show them or send pics. Our canoeing club in Chicago was doing this once or twice a year.
LOVING this
I did not know bowling balls float, odd.
There's a river right behind my house, last time we went kayaking with my wife we picked up several plastic ducks, the kind kids play with in their bath and they were numbered, wired. I picked up like 3 pounds of plastic trash and Bud cans. I always pick up the trash when on my kayak as there's room in it, that stuff ends up at sea sooner or later, I can't stand how humans can be so disgusting.
When we lived in Chicago we spent a lot of vacation time in Michigan on the lake coast (beautiful coast BTW) and I was always picking up the deflated BD party balloons on shores by the dozen. These fly from Chicago area and end up on Michigan beaches. I think they should be outlawed, not kidding.
The worst was once a family from a US neighbor country's origin that had a baby and a loud radio all day and left poop loaded diapers on the beach along with a stack of plastic bottles. I swear I wanted to kill them but they left before I noticed the damage. I picked up the bottles but could not do the diapers though.
I'm sure most of you heard about the great pacific garbage patch, if not google it.
just like the ones I've found. How can they be that stupid.
that sounds like me, actually pumping up the orange kite behind you. By the time I was ready everybody was packing for Nahant as the wind switched direction and kinda died. That's what I got for sleeping in I guess but also had to drive over an hour to get there.
Once at Nahant I helped a guy fixing his crossed lines and launch for some rocky body dragging in the swell he attempted. Then the wind switched to North West by the time I was ready again and the day was over for kiting. I had a great sesh at WD on Friday so the weekend was not a complete loss.
First time for me as well at Yirrell, nice beach I concur if not for all the trash washing ashore but unfortunately that's almost everywhere these days.
Nice post.
Madeline, glad you had a good time and experience at Yirrel. I live in Revere but have been riding at Yirrel for many years and is one of my favorite spots to ride. Loved your report. Thanks and keep on trying.
I really enjoy the blog style report and the personal touch that defines a blog. The Pres was not nearly going to be as cool as seeing friends on the water!
... we went to Nahant to finish up the surf sesh, u did not miss too much
J
Love the dream intro! Nice to meet you today!
Love the dream intro! Nice to meet you today!
Great day at Yirrell....
Love how you document these escapades!
The day was totally on for me. Started out powered up on the 9, then rode Benny Be's Ocean State Job Lot $200 special surfboard strapless with the Screamed 14. I love that spot. Closest riding spot to my house, so I'll call myself a local.
Looking good on that surf board Jean!
Awesome! I love reading your blog posts!!!
Nice write up Madeleine, and nice session with all of you today.

I have to say though that the downfall of the blog is that the pictures never show up on the slideshow. I have considered switching to session reports for that very reason.. Anything you can do about that Captain?
