kiteboarding free style competition in boston
we all know that kite boarding is getting big around the Boston area, what i don't understand how come we haven't organize a small free style competition in Boston so we can push the old school rider who has been riding for a long time,im sure they will appreciate a trophy or new boards or anything small,we really should work on this idea before the season is over.
It takes planning an event to guarantee the wind doesn't blow....
The wind issue can be done over a weekend. Also we have had ideas to do multiple weekends and take those available on the windy opportunities and judge accordingly. But the real thing is as a community we have so many new to the sport that it would almost be better at this stage to do some fun "biggest splash" "worst wipe out" "Best 1st time kiteloop" "highest jump"
But a few riders are going to take it and so there we could do ranking of some sort. Ranking by peers. Maybe determine the repertoire of tricks ect and do a handicap and keep it real. But I think that was the reason and we have done very well with social non wind events. That way you can network and meet faces to site nicknames ect.
Some items that are also great are getting a few video cameras and documenting an event and the gathering the tapes ect and making more good day on the water community videos. Downwinders are great for us to plan especially with a boat or two.
Folks,
I'f you guys are looking for volunteers counting me in since I'm a newbie and for sure would love to participate. Maybe this will be a great opportunity to try a kiteloop who know's.
Keep me posted if we are taking this to the next step or we are just dreaming about it..
Ride Hard stay safe!

This is the kind of thing that we look forward to gaining support for. If enough people support the thread we should vet out the details. My thoughts are a weekend, a few T-shirts, and hopefully some wind. We then could have a good opportunity for a Sat night meet and greet. In the end we can cut a good video with some extra hands.
Need to think of what the individual competitions will be and take the 1st one as a "just have some fun event"
On another note the video opp will be top notch as I have a feeling some local talent might get camera happy as a chance to highlight the very best of local Kiteboarding!
How bout we get a few categories, and get people who want to enter to pay $5. Peers can judge, and winner takes the $$ (which prolly wouldn't be much). And should prolly buy some beers at the Farragut house. We could say contest happens on the first good wind day of each week. Or could be determined on the beach on any given day.
I want the "biggest splash" award! How about highest jump for big blokes?
Last summer at Chapin I took Tommy's black and yellow small sports radio....about the size of those bulky Sony sports camcorder from the early 1990's and started pointing it on the water as if I was taking pictures, faking it was a camcorder. Sooner than I expected people started coming close so I could get that perfect (imaginary) shot but I was really trying to prove who is a "picture pimp" or "camera slut"? T and Netto a few others were attracted to it like bugs to an untraviolet bug zapper at night racing back and forth posing for the radio. It was hillarious because only a few of us realized it was a radio instead of a camera. I was cheering them on and they kept coming back for more. The gag was to see which kiteboarder is the biggest "camera slut" or a "picture pimp".
We should have a real cameral hidden to snap the kiters' reaction to the radio gag and how long before they realize it's not a camera that they've been throwing down a trick for or we should make a sign saying "you've been posing for a radio" after a few good ticks and shoot their reaction to that. I think a video interview of the aftermath would be funny as hell. The category for this should be "How long before I realized that I am the biggest camera slut?"
So I would like to post up some leaders and talent here. I think the video idea is important as if there will be good talent then we have a great opp for a good video highlight. I suggest if it is video oriented then we could do a certain number off passes for each rider. Then film them and put them on youtube from there we as a community can vote using the site which I can configure each as a poll. That might resolve some of the "need for the perfect windy day" it will also allow everyone to participate on the efforts of a few to get it taped cut and posted. It also allows for a second launch and even separate day for more beginner intermediate fun.
At the end of the day its about participation, laughs, and seeing people try new things or share there spirit to evolve each year as an enthusiast.
I think community judging on a rating system from video solves many obstacles and allows for the "event" to span a week or two with allot of the excitement found here online if you cant make it or can only attend one of the windy days.
If not we can surly do it the old fashioned way and get a day of wind and throw down. Just trying to allow all schedules and wind to participate.
First beginner to participate and I think the video idea would work that way all the community could vote for the best or worse one of all..
I think we should start planning this ASAP before the summer/fall is over.
Are any of you guys going to be at Chris's for the Hatt release? We have been organizing a plan and would like to include others to participate.

I'm going to try to be there, really...I AM.
I just got giggy.
i think this is a great idea. and a good way to push us beginers to the next level... and watch some of you "seasoned" guys to really throw down
JD, I'm going to Chris place on the 12th
Looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the crew!

Where does Chris live? I'd love to attend.
This would be fun, but where would you realistically do it? Too bad the only wind we get anymore is from hurricanes...
Thinks need to be grassroots. Maybe use some video recording and online collaboration through polls and voting using teh starring ranks. Videos can be served as youtube clips. We shoot your best 10 runs and then clip 10 riders to some music. Then after you vote on your favorite. We can take the best wipe outs and highest jump ideas as exhibition. Basically a few extra video cameras and hands can get the editoe tapes shot over the next 2 months say..
Perfect days will be considered an event. The day that produced most of the video and heads will likely be deemed the event.
In the end lots of great tricks on a video is the goal and some fun voting. Then learn for next year.
THoughts? As that is just my brain storm. If not we can do first windy day on a weekend.. But we miss out on who is not there and only a few get to vote..
I'll make sure to be on the waves at Chatham while it's going on! LOL
While i am busy being a one mann show. I am always interested in helping where I can,
I like the Idea and would do what I can from my end to help this event. I would like to Ride PBay and this would be a great reason to go over the bridge!
Let me know!

We were talking about sponsors recently and are looking to support those that collaborate so that we can rally as a community. If MASSkiting can have this kind of support then we can really get pumped. I am all for it! 100% for MASSKiting to create new ways to get together and stay on the edge of this New England scene. Phil is really a good choice and has done the Kookapolooza and has allot of experience there. Maybe this event will have more people work with us and sponsor some group outings. The return is that we can better commit some resources to making it a hit.
I hope to see more of this working with the group attitude! After all this site is for us and all vendors have been welcome. But we should work to support our own events. We should then do our best to support those businesses that decided to collaborate and return that favor.
I also like seeing the grass roots of this starting with Youngkiter getting us to get planning
I'm pretty friendly with a few of the local business owners along Revere Beach. I'm sure I can get some event sponsorship if the event is held around there.
ok well on the other hand what about cosmetic stuff. like when you have a date and location set you start sending out the news feed via internet, emails, flyers, and even get a real masskiting banner made for events you guys will start hosting.i know it may take some time for all the details to fall into place, but from what i see, the masskiters hearts are into this, and if you guys really want a competition then you should find ways to hook it up. this competition will be so fun for you all, and like you guys said there will be beginners who will want to progress just by seeing what the guys do on the water with tricks and jumps and speed. and another idea, if we can get the spouses of the kiters all together for this event we can all help out in some way. like some people can make sure there is enough bottled water or gatorade for the kiterz. another person can can go around taking pictures of all the kiters standing next to there competition kite and take group pictures. a few more people can help out with some snacks and food for the kiters. someone else can go around the local beaches and put flyers on the car windows and send out emails to local kitesurfers to let them know the official date. we could even have a volunteer valet system. kiters drop there car at the beach to unload and someone can tag the keys and park the cars, like vip status so the kiters can feel so special for this competition. im sure someone in masskiting has a friend who is a lifeguard who can be off duty and there just in case something happens. also someone can volunteer first aid kit for any small injuries. and someone else could make sure the portion of the location is cleared of people for this event so the kiters have room for launch and set up. and maybe someone can go around helping the kiters pump there kites, set it up and ask them if they have any words to share for masskiting while being taped on video. i am very good with a computer. i can do alot with some programs i have. so if there is anything i can do to help with planning let me or youngkiter know.

hey Philip i really thing you should sponsor this event ....
