State Beach- MV

State Beach is a 3 mile stretch of public beach which works well with most wind directions but is best in some form of an east wind. The kiting is split between the outer beach and Sengenkontacket pond on the inside giving kiters the option to kite bumbs and shore break on the outside or flat shallow water pond side.

Be respectful and during the summer be extra careful of the beach-goers and families.

Where to launch

The main launch area is at“Jaws Bridge” for both ocean side and pond side. The pond side beach is extremely limited so rig up quick and hit the water. During SW winds, the only recommended launch zone is at the “first bridge” at the north end of the beach. Park in the lot and walk up to the point to the left (300 yards up wind) to launch your kite. Stay up by the point and do not ride near the parking lot as the wind is onshore and some newbies have ended up on the road!

The "Jaws" Bridge is currently under construction so there is a lot going on around the launch area. As part of this there are several large metal pipes and concrete bases in the water to the north of the pond side launch area. Take a look and spot them before you launch and hit the water.

Beach road from either Edgartown or Oakbluffs.

Parking

Parking is available along the road and in two small lots at the north and south ends of the beach. It gets very limited in the summer. The public transportation is really great on the island and runs every 15 minutes between the two towns if your willing to lug your gear on a bus.

Nearby Bars

Sharkys in Edgartown or OB have the best margaritas around as well as some great food. Sharkys in Edgartown is the closest real bar to the beach.
