I haven't been out there yet but if it's frozen and still has snow it's a good direction for it - ikitesurf is saying 12-14mph SW...

looks like easy access at the end of Linda St. or Rd. and would be great for NW or SW.

Looks like a good spot from space.. and plenty big. No real land obstructions from what I see, looks like all direction would work. Ice?? Snowcover??

Re: 1/22/09 Lake Quannapowitt snowkiting

My friend Billy and I are up for tomorrow... looking for a spot to go. Does Indian lake work well in a WSW? I really don't want to have a mountain right up wind of us again (although the winds do look much better).

I would like to find something closer regardless..

Anyone leaving from the Boston area at 2? Anyone need to? Just looking to carpool... I should have my GF's car.

Re: 1/22/09 Lake Quannapowitt snowkiting

Well according to sources including my magic 8ball it looks like Lake Quannapowitt should be getting as much wind as anyone else and it's alot closer -a warm front is blowing in around noon and bringing with it a burst of gusty air - whats better then a lunchtime ride around Boston?

I'll assess the ice, snow cover and wind earlier tomorrow on my way to work but it looks like a good day in the making....

I guess I'll wait to hear how that lake is before I make a decision since I won't be heading out till 2. I may join you if it looks good.

Alternatives I've just scoped out on satellite (any feedback please!):

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=42.2 ... 9&t=h&z=15

with land backup:

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=42.2 ... 7&t=h&z=17

A little further west:

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=42.2 ... 5&t=h&z=16

Then if all else fails heading further west towards Indian. But Indian does look to have a pretty major wind shadow out of the SW...

I like the lake on the Military Reservation- are you trying to get your kite shot down Smile
I think in a west wind FP golfcourse would actually be a good option - it was very fun terrain last time with a little uphill action.

But I still prefer a lake for the smoothing out of gusts

Ice is great- half way out it was still >9in thick- already sweating fromthe walk out and back-
10inof fresh untracked powder and winds 10-20mph why are you not here for a lunch run?
Exit 39 off 95n off 93n 15min from Boston park at the lot corner of main and prospect right down street from exit and right before citgo- you'll see me kiting...

Re: 1/22/09 Lake Quannapowitt snowkiting

It was great from noon-2pm - no more fresh tracks for you guys - I got them all Laughing out loud

How was Indian and Southborough guys?

Met Brian flying his Paraski Flex - cool Canadian kite with only 3 short lines -
Also met Rob (I assume robdar who posted below) who lives on the lake and is interested in bringing his 11m LEI out - winds look light though - maybe he can carpool with us up to Lake Winni this Saturday?

Now switching to the thread on Lake Winnipesaukee this Saturday...

Re: 1/22/09 Lake Quannapowitt snowkiting

Freaking frustrating day... a foot of untouched powder but barley enough wind to pull us through it. Did the wind drop for anyone else around 3?! The place we were at seemed to be perfect for a west wind - about a mile of lake and no real obstructions for at least a few miles upwind of the lake.

I did get in two really good 5min or so periods where I was just having a blast... just wish the 3 hours I was out there was like that....

Re: 1/22/09 Lake Quannapowitt snowkiting

what's up, bob, elliot

indian was pretty good. I took the 17m out which may have been a bit much at times. gusts up to 15mph at the launch. gotta believe the middle of the lake got hit pretty good. lotta west in the wind yesterday. bob, you must have ridden indian in a west wind cuz i'm pretty sure you live in the green house.

then i joined sumpanda in southboro for a few. pretty sure that that reservoir is patrolled by the staties and off limits. probably worth a ticket, though because the snow was awesome.
