155 cm Kite board Bag OK for airport check-in??
Guys, Just recently I ordered a 155cm bag. There was also an option to get a 140cm bag. I got the 155 in hopes it would fit in my Light Wind Board. I got the bag the other day and its huge!
I am worried I might have trouble getting through airport check-in with this thing. Also my light wind board doesn't fit in it! I got a smaller Mako board that would fit in it though but then its overkill for that board.
Should I return it and get the 140cm? What do you guys think? Has anyone had any issues with a similar sized bag through airport check in? Let me know your thoughts my traveling kite boarders. Thanks!
Elvis
I've flown with big bags for snowboarding trips before. Bags over 160 cm long with no problem.
Check your flight carrier's website. They usually have some blurbs about oversized luggage. Generally, if the total length is under 80 in (length + width + height) you're OK.
Here's what Delta says, though when I traveled my bag was between 63-80 inches and I did not have to pay extra fees:
"175 USD/CAD/EUR* for bags measuring 63–80 inches (161-203 cm) total of length+width+height
300 USD/CAD/EUR* for bags measuring 81-115 inches (204-292 cm) total of length+width+height
Bags larger than 115 inches (292 cm) are not allowed"
I've use my couple times with no problem, if you can make sure you do the curb check in and slide 20 bucks into the person @ the curb desk and you are golden...
Last time that I used I was 15 pounds over and the guy didn't say a word
Have a safe flight and enjoy the trip wherever you going
The whole...just go to curb check in doesn't even remotely apply anymore i have found. they weigh and measure everything. I have been trying to get quivers of race skis (5+) to CO for years, and kite gear, and sailing blades and gear to where ever else.
Snow boards and skis are exempt...so if you got a snowboard bag across going to UT you will most likely not get a kite-board bag across going to FL. There is a length exemption for skis. Its all about the max dimensional size. 150cm is tough, I would ship it. Forget about surfboards. Cheaper to rent. I would not bank on tipping well and being fine without a back-up plan.
oh yea...and fly Southwest.
Good Luck!
Elvis, I just returned from Aruba. I traveled with the smaller of the two Best kiteboarding 'Golf' bags. most airlines accept a 158 max, with a 50lb limit. I traveled with two kites, 14 and a 10m, two bars, 1 board, a 133cm Best Float, harness, pump, neoprene shorts, a couple rash guards. All this weighed 48.8 lbs. I had no problems. I think your 155 will be fine, just make sure you weigh it, don't get the stuff wet!
good luck.
ohyeah, at logan use the curbside skycheck, have the 10 dollar tip visible. Also, and importantly, you can purchase the extra bag option right there at the curb kiosk. For some reason I had to pay 27 bucs on the way out, no charge when I was returning...
ohyeah, I flew US air, United has specific provisions for kiteboards, check there web site if your flying with them.
From their site:
Kite boards
Allowance/requirements
1 case holding kite boards
Allowed in place of one checked bag
Maximum weight/size
50 pounds/62 linear inches
(23 kg/158 linear cm)
Other information
None
When they ask you "what's in the bag", avoid saying the word "board". If you say kitebaord or wakeboard, they will likely associate it with a surfboard and charge you extra.
If you have a 140CM board, check out the Dakine BTS bag. It's 2 seperate bags that strap together so you can wheel it easily through the airport, but you can unstrap them and ship as 2 seperate bags so you don't exceed the 50lb weight limit. It won't accept a big lighwind board, but it will accomodate up to a 140cm board. I've been able to pack my board, 3 kites, and all the other hooplah with no problem.
So what do you call it? Camping equipment?

Sounds like I should return it and get the 140cm bag.
