Aruban KiteSurfing
Just got back from a few days in Aruba and I have to say it was a blast kiting there. Talked and rented gear from a local kiting instructor Lysander Loefstok http://www.arubakitesurfingschool.com/. I was amazed by a couple things, first how short of a flight it was to Aruba (4 hours 15 minutes) and how cheap the entire trip was. You could go all inclusive with flight 5 nights $900.00.
Kiting there is interesting because you are kiting in direct offshore conditions and the water is pure glass. The waves near the lighthouse looked delicious side shore breaking 4-8 feet depending on location. All in all great place to ride probably hit it again this winter for a long weekend.
Thanks Jay
Now that you've got me drooling....I gotta hit Aruba!!
dude I loved Aruba. Its def gusty but such great wind and a great local scene. Plus no open container laws!
Would love to go down again at some point
No open container laws are the first criteria I look for when visiting a place for vacation...
I agree. Constant wind and no open container laws are crucial to a good vaca. Looking in to this flight/destination.
Armando and his gang at the Hotel Beach sometimes kite just
upwind of California Lighthouse, you take a left off the paved road to the lighthouse about 200 yards short of the lighthouse, then follow coral/rock road towards the ocean, about 500 yards going 5mph you get to a flat coral reef on top of which you launch and gingerly walk into the water. There is a nice wind swell up to maybe twice head high with sideon trades, best in pm. Look for the locals surfing there in am to find the spot which you can see from lighthouse and the road. Its a nofall spot, they don't use leashes.
I am heading down again in May, hopefully with the beach "mayor" Marshall already in residence.
Did you make your way over to Boca Grande on the other side of the island? Wind is more onshore with lots of waves, directly in front of a prison.
Direct flight is so clutch. San Juan is the same way.
I'm going there next week! I'm really psyched. Did you have the same school watch over you in case you got blown out too far and couldn't get back? I hear that's what you're supposed to do there.
Eugene - if you have a rental car, be sure to hit Boca Grande beach. The wind tends to be much stronger (and not off shore) and there's a terrain park of waves with zero tourists. It's about a 30 minute drive from the hotels, but totally worth it. Here's the directions and I added a picture below from my trip a few years back.
To get to Boca Grande you will have to drive to the southeast end of the island (however, they actually call it the "north" side of the island because of the way it lies kind of on an angle-- check out any map and you will see what I am talking about). Boca Grande is a decent sized beach and you will want to launch from the far left hand side as you look out onto the water. To get to the launch site you will take the main road on the island until it hits a "T" at the site of a giant red anchor. You will then take a left onto a dirt road and go about 1/2 mile-- go past the prison that is on your left. Look for an access road to the beach on your right. You are going to feel like you are "off roading" but I made it in a little rental car no problem. If you go on a weekend, there will be other kiters and you can see their cars. If you do during a weekday you might be the only one there and the makeshift "parking lot" may be hard to find.

Thanks for the info! I'll try to hit that up
