My buddy posted this video of training for the upcoming course racing worlds. There is also some freestyle towards the end, all from Biscayne Bay in Miami. I'm hoping to try some of these boards when I am in Florida in a couple weeks, especially if it's light while I'm there. Course racing looks like a lot of fun, and I'm hoping the board development will start to slow down a bit so used boards will stay competitive.

Racing...

I come from a background of catamaran racing.

I think it would be great to organize some buoy races with directionals, I know there would be a bunch of us interested.

You def need a chase boat and some markers. I know that Jay and Phil both have boats and I'm sure Phil has some exta markers from the WD beach setup.

Maybe we can make it happen this spring when the winds are super strong and reliable.

I'll hit up Jay and Phil to see what they think.

Racing

I grew up racing sailboats as well, and would definitely be interested in some course racing.

How....

do we make this happen? Anyone ever done any course racing on kites?

All we need is a 1-2 race boats (one starting line, one chase), some buoys and some consistent wind.

What do people think a good venue for the event will be?
Keep it small and low key, try to pull off 2 or 3 races, short A-C legs.

Hmmm...

We could keep it simple.

We could keep it simple. Windward Leeward, twice around, no gate. Only need two marks (maybe 3 if you want a change mark). Have a windward and use the pin end of the line as the leeward mark.

Starts can be 3-minute whistle sequences like the ones used in a lot of dinghy sailing (I think it is appendix Q).

I have never done any kite racing, but have done lots of dinghy racing and race committee for lots of events. My friend who taught me to kite helped make the video and is training with the group for worlds, so I can ask him if he has any recommendations.

What would be fun, and completely impractical, would be to use the Charles on a strong westerly. Start line down by the Harvard sailing center, windward up by MIT, launch from the MIT pavilion..... just think of the spectators lining the bridges and esplanade....

I'm pretty sure I'll come in dead last, but count me in.
PBay is made for it.

Course Racing Experience

Hey,

I used to course race kite buggies when I was a sponsored rider for JOJO Kites and Libre Kite buggies. I used to help set up courses and rules across the country. If you need any help with that let me know. Of course anytime you set up a kiting related event in New England it will either rain or there will be no wind.
