I was talking with a Boston technology Venture Capitalist tonight about the growing kiteboarding trend in the valley among the nations leading tech based startup executives and I struggled to come up with a reason why the trend had not yet caught on here in the east.

Do you know of any Boston based tech CXO's or Vp's who are into this sport? If so, I'll be working on a special project and would like to know who.

Thx,
Joe

If there were

I feel they would have met the crazy people from Masskiting and probably ran like hell away from the sport Smile

I'm one of them ;)

I'm a Boston are CTO / VP, and I'm getting into kiteboarding. I'm just a beginner, learning, but it's a blast.

I think two reasons it hasn't caught on here: weather (cold, although it's not like the Pacific is super-warm), and area techies don't have a good work-life balance. It's often looked upon badly if you leave early in the afternoon to catch some wind. I think it's mostly bullshit, but it is what it is.

I'd love to it to catch up more. What's your project, Joe?

Difference in culture

Hey Joe,

I'm in the tech world and know several high ups out in SF that are into kiting but you're right there isn't the same type of thing happening around here. I've thought about this a bit and my thought is it's a difference in the cultures between the west coast and Boston. I'd say YoavShapira nailed it on the head about people looking down on us for leaving the office to catch some wind. I'm sure a lot of us can share stories of this.

Another factor I think comes in is age. I don't have hard data on it but I would suspect out west you have a lot of younger C levels / VPs then around here.

All that being said I think the larger the kite community gets the more higher ups will get involved. I'm also interested in hearing more about the project.

Kyle

Thanks guys

As always, thanks for the input Yoav. And nice to virtually meet you as well Kyle. I'm not sure why kiteboarding is so popular among the west coast entrepreneurs and not at all here in the Boston area and this is why I started the thread.

1. To find out how many Boston area entrepreneurs are into Kiteboarding
2. If the answer to #1 is not many, find out why

I signed up for the Masskiting trip to OBX in late April and would like to organize an event this fall at OBX for Boston area Vp's and C level executives who are either into Kiteboarding or want to learn how. It would be a great opportunity to network, learn about best practices and it could very well turn into an annual event with people coming back year after year to strengthen the relationships and umm their kiteboarding skills as well.

So how many people do you think we/I could recruit between now and say late September? If you are a C level (or Vp) interested in helping me put this together and recruit enough people so we have critical mass let me know.

Thanks for the help.
Joe

I'm sure you guys have seen this article and embedded video (it's been posted on this site) and it's what inspired me:

Appropriate kite camp venue for Boston CXO's or Vp's?

Just as the Silicon Valley techies found the perfect place at Maui, how about São Vicente for Boston CXO's or Vp's?
We have a Harvard student taking kitesurfing lessons with us this week. He confirmed that the flight is convenient (direct fligth with TACV from Boston to Praia connecting with 30min hop to São Vicente).
