Does this mean death?!
Does the attached picture spell death for anyone out on the water with a 12M?
Just out of curiousity, if you were on the water, what can you do to save your life?
I saw this too earlier.. Thats a major wind shift too.
just let go of the bar to depower kite.
sorry I thought it would be obvious that I was joking. Should have included a
Short answer: Yep
you would have had a warning, such as a darkening sky in advance of the cell.
Unhook and grab an Oh Shit handle and hang on for life. See if you can keep wrapping that line around the bar until you get to the kite. Make sure you don't wrap lines evenly so the kite can't take off. Use your kite to float you and to sail yourself back to shore safely.
Once on shore, empty the bricks from your shorts
This is a software issue as far wind speed goes.. Cause few different places had the same info I was looking into Eastern Point and spike to 60MPH there 2
The site went on maintenance mode about 1 hours after this spike happens
But if you happen to encounter this type of wind dude go for it and jump as high as you can cause may be your last one
LOL
Just kidding ride safe and always check the forecast before hit the water..
My opinion is when the wind is shifting a lot like it did that is a bad sign of either storm coming or skunk day!
15 to 50 in 5 minutes. People pulled the main release and many others just let go of their kite.
Simply, put the kite on the edge of the window and release the main safety. if you start getting pulled through or on the water, release your leash.
In other words....fuck the kite.
Practice releasing the safety in shallow water or when self landing. Then You'll know what to do when it happens. I've released my safety about a hundred times just to be comfortable with it.
Do not sit in the water with the kite at 12, you WILL get lofted and possibly slammed into something hard.
If the wind switches and comes up quick it can be highly dangerous. there was a close call at horseneck this spring in a switch from wsw to nw then onto nnw an building to 30ish. one guy was down with kite ripped and headed out past goosebeery pt. luckily he was rescued before getting too far offshore.
for those of you newer to the sport who may not remember this accident in ct where holding on to a kite then ditching once pretty offshore, combined with other factors, was probably the wrong choice:
http://www.kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2324004
so if the wind comes up hard offshore either ditch your kite (let it go completely) quickly before you are too far offshore to swim in, probably best to keep your board for a bit of float.
Once you are too far to swim (and it not always clear how far that is depending on the wind and current, it is really tough to swim against 30 knot winds, impossible with a rolled up kite) then probably best to hold the kite to increase chances of being spotted by rescuers
If the wind is cross-off you can usually maintain a beam reach by holding the tips of the kite and using it as a sail...hard to make much progress to windward, but in cross off this technique can probably get you in way down the beach. I have used it even with a partially ripped kite in sideshore wind and made good progess back in. it will also work with a kite that is too soft(due to a leaky le) to fly properly but still has some air in the le.
And if you do ditch a kite and make it in safely it is a good idea to call the local harbor master or coast guard, if they have a local presence, to make sure a search doesn't get initiated.
You can't count on a warning sign, such as dark clouds. It has happened before localy with no warning at all.
I don't think it would kill you, it probably wouldn't matter if you were off the beach you'd probly just get tea bagged but you'd probly be fucked if you had your kite in the air on the beach
It happens, I ditched my kite, you can see it leaving me at Chatham when the wind went from Nice 10 meter to out of control.
Good News I did get it back.
I was very happy to let her go at that point.
When in Doubt- PUNCH OUT!
There were squalls in the area that seemed a long way away-
Bad decision to go Kite that day-

I would think if you let go of the bar the kite is still powered up like mad and might pull the kite sideways as it drops?
The wind is circling in all directions in that graph..
