I am an experience skier, but started kiteboarding recently. I have about 9 sessions after my kite lessons. I can water-start and plain every now and then, since my 6th session. I have a 10m SS Rally.

Would it be safe for me to get my ski/kite, and try to snow kite myself?

Snowkiting is a little eaiser

Snowkiting is a little eaiser than water. you dont need quite as much power. and you can walk back if needed. So rig smaller than usual. Just take extra caution if you are by your self. Grab yourself an ice screw for easy landing and launching.

Why go alone if don't have to?

There are some weekend outings slowly trickling in here....

I will try to make the Sat or Sun one

Yes, thanks. I have seen them when you posted. and I will try to make the Sat or Sun one, but not sure (I may have to work Sad ).

I should have said "without getting snowkiting lessons" instead of "alone" in my original question. I would not think about kiting alone at this stage, water or snow Smile

Thanks

Definitely bring an Ice screw

Definitely bring an Ice screw with you. They're expensive... about $75 but they are invaluable out on the ice, especially if your by yourself. If there is no snow, it is can be really difficult to hold your ground. Simple things like self launch and land take on a whole new level of difficulty when you cant stand up and even a light breeze will drag you on u down the lake on ur ass.

Strap the screw to your boot so there's no way to accidently impale yourself on it if you fall.

Riding ice is easier in a lot of ways, but trickier in others.

Don't Pay $80 for an ice screw

Instead buy one from here and send me the difference in cash.

Preparations

After one session of ice kiting, I bought an ice screw. However, I haven't been able to use it as I have spent the last 3 winters in Florida. I also filled a few bird seed sacks with sand to place on my kites when launching on sheer ice. When launching on snow, I suspect you can use snow to stabilize the kite. All the gear that I carry, I put in a back pack. Then whatever is left (water bottle, etc. I figure I would put in the pack and secure to the ice. This way it wouldn't blow around. On the snow, I suspect that isn't trouble, but you don't have to worry about running over the screw. I also use ram air kites (1.0, 3.6, 4.4) which are much easier to self launch and re-launch.
