Fogland could get taken over by an Oyster Farm being proposed now

I kite here on occassion when I'm back in RI and I just learned of this potential threat to access at Fogland from the iKite forum. If you've never kited or windsurfed Fogland it has long been a hotspot for windsports in RI.

http://www.eastbayri.com/detail/136098.html

From the local paper....""Submitted by Chris Clarendon of Tiverton, the Fogland proposal seeks permission to put grow eastern oysters in shallow water to the east and just north of Fogland Beach.

The arguement for using the water in the cove is "the water there is too shallow for boating". The windsurf and kitesurf community should speak up as this area has long time been used for butter flatwater sessions.

Anyone wishing to comment on either of these proposals may do so by writing to Coastal Resources Management Council, Stedman Government Center, 4804 Tower Hill Road, Wakefield, RI 02879-1900""

I just spent all weekend

I just spent all weekend kiting there. It's a great spot and one of the few great beginner friendly spots in the area. It would be a shame if we lost the ability to kite there.

Deadline to send a letter is

Deadline to send a letter is June 14.

I think it's really important for each of us to send a letter, even if you don't kite at Fogland. we need to protect access as a masskiting community principle.

Yeah....

This place needs to be protected. Just imagine all the windsurfers that will be showing up at kite launches.
We must keep the 1980's intact and quarantined off at
Fogland!LOL

template?

Can someone post a sample letter they are going to send there? I think a lot more people would send the letter if there was a template we could use and just sign our names at the bottom (but still send the letters out individually).

Thanks in advance!

Dear Coastal Resources Management Council,

I’m very concerned that Chris Clarendon's Fogland Oyster Project will effectively eliminate the use of this waterway which is a long-time established recreational area for windsurfers and kiteboarders. This established recreational use must be protected. Fogland Cove’s shallow water and strong winds make the location a perfect venue for windsurfing and kiteboarding.

The Fogland COVE area that is suggested by Chris Clarendon as “too shallow for boating” is a perfect location for windsurfing and kiteboarding. The shallow water near shore in the cove is ideal, particularly for beginners, their families or elderly who still partake in these sports.  The water and wind conditions as well as beach access are very special at Fogland and absolutely not available just anywhere. Even being pushed just across the beach on the South side will make this recreation impossible for many people. This is an important and unique recreational spot in Rhode Island. It absolutely must be protected.

Windsurfing and kiteboarding are non-polluting, wind- and body-powered sports that are extremely healthy and positive for the participants as well as the community. The local economy benefits – from business and services used by the windsurfers and kiteboarders. The local community benefits -- at a time of growing concern about obesity and other health issues, established healthy outdoor recreation must be set at a premium of importance. In addition, windsurfers and kiteboarders pay an entrance fee to the beach which benefits Tiverton.

Please do not allow the negative recreational impacts of the proposed oyster project to take place.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
