Gloves
Dudes,
I'm in the market for some new winter kiting gloves. Anyone have any rave reviews on what you're using? Lemme know b/c my hands are getting cold.

I like my 3m xcel drylocks. Lasted all last season and still have bunch left for this season. Very tip of one finger got cold couple time, but had a fracture there long time ago and just bad circulation.
Rode all winter/spring etc snow and icebergs
I tried four types of gloves and they all were hard on the forearms and my hands were just as cold.
I swapped to the DaKine Cold Water Neo Mitts and I haven't been cold since.
$30 from Phil : http://www.inlandsea.com/p-413-dakine-cold-water-neo-mitts.aspx
Seriously, google them, they are the best.
Wicked rave review of the NRS Reactor. Sep fingers, precurved for kayaking. Its a long glove that keeps my arm to my drysuit warm and I was toasty for 5 hrs yesterday. Not the slightest bit cold. $39. See them in the video I posted earlier. Awesome gloves.
I like the 3mm glacier gloves. REI sometimes has them for cheap.
I just got the 2mm glacier gloves with fleece lining, precurved for kayaking. Tried them out first time yesterday - comfortable fit, easy to control the bar and totally warm.
I have the same 2mm glacier gloves. I wore them all last season through the worst of January and February. They are great. There were times my hands got a little cold. I think the 3mm would easily get you through all winter, but make sure they are pre curved.
Of course the other thing to remember is everyones circulation is different. Some people can get away with thinner suits, gloves, and boots then others...
Some people have more insulation too.. I know I have been working up to just wearing a 3/2 year round
I got frost nip on my fingertip skin last winter so I am always searching for a better glove solution, my fingertip skin started peelking a month ago. They aren't cold, but kiting now makes them peel!
Sad, I know, I have been an addict to the wind for too long.
A sailing partner of mine recommended that I get something to keep the fingertip totally dry.
I've recently purchased Mystic "Dry Glove" which ufortunately is not totally dry, even when I overlap the latex cuff with the wrist cuff in my drysuit. The Mystic water repellant neoprene surface (over the latex inner layer) does keep wind and evaporation energy loss to a minimum. Yesterday I put playteex latex gloves under the mystic dry gloves and overlapped both with my drysuiit latex cuffs, this seemed to do the trick but sweat eventually built up. Like the mystic dry glove but "nonstick" inner surface of latex means water wants to wick up and into glove.
Questions:
Anyone have experience with dry gloves that they are happy about for kiting? I am trying to avoid putting platsic rings at wrists like a scuba diver with gloves stretched tight over plastic.
Anyone ever use Gull brand dry sailing gloves with success?
Is the NRS reactor glove dry inside when used over the latex cuff of a drysuit?
Missed everyone in Dennis yesterday , got a late day sunset session on the 5.5m.
I am also curious about dry gloves for kiting. Also anyone ever tried putting hand warmers inside your wetsuit gloves? Would the water stop them from working or would the stuff just dissolve into your glove? I have been wanting to try this but figured it would just become a gross mess.
Robert, the NRS reactors are not dry, however, they fit so tight, in a very comfortable way because they are precurved, very little water gets in and the water has never been cold, and my hands have never been cold. After the session on Sunday, I took them off and turned them upside down and nothing came out.
Chad, I can't tell you what gloves to get but I can tell you not to get the Ocean Rodeo 3mm Coldfires. They are horrible. They are extremely stiff and my hands have never not been cold in them. On multiple occasions I actually took them off and was better off without them.
Which gloves have the best grip? I was trying to do unhooked stuff yesterday, and the combo of the thickness of the gloves and the material they are made of made gripping that bar tightly a problem. I need something that no wind gets in, really form fitting, and super grip... any of the gloves that have already been discussed fit this description?
I have the ion claw gloves. They fingers are pre-form on a grip position so less strain in the arms although they are quite windproof they leak a bit of water.

The NRS gloves I mentioned above definatly do. Only issue is that they are switching to a new glove in the spring and have stopped making this glove. Its therefore almost impossible to find a lg if that's your size, but the good is that they are selling for around $29 in some places if you can get your size. I wear the m.
Glacier Gloves 2MM, O'Neill surf gloves 3MM, Oneill 5MM.
All these are very soft so they have very good grip and less restriction. They don't last very long (1 season for me) but that's the trade off.
I think it's the glacier gloves that I've tried that are the only ones that I've liked so far. They have fleece lined ones... I wonder if that will give me the same problem and have trouble gripping the bar inside my glove.
After hating 2 pairs I had I went to Rei and got gloves made for winter kayaking and/or rafting that are curved and toasty warm they have multiple thickness and you can try them on they work great and zero forearm discomfort
Which one did you get? They sell all kinds:

I've had the fleece lined and non fleece lined Glacier Gloves. They are almost the same. You can't really see any fleece inside. I didn't notice any difference in grip. I think the "fleece lined" are slightly warmer. I may still have an old pair of each so you could take a look, or try them, if I see you at the beach.
Talked to Kristof who was at a store tonight. Said the fleece lined are just that blue kind of fleece layer. I went to REI today, and found out I live near like the only REI that doesn't have kayak stuff (or glacier gloves). Doh!!
I've tried Kristof's hyperflex gloves and liked them the most so far. Athens 3mm. Andyou got anything that compares??
Accept nothing less.....

I have the Stohlquist Paddle Maw Gloves from REI listed on the link above. I got them at the REI in Wakefield, the curve in the gloves make them super comfy and easy on forearms.
Hyperflex 1.5 is best for me. I also found ocean rodeo 3mm stiff. I know the glaz. Glove has been around a long time.saw the dakine mitts at phils which look cozy as well if u can do mitts. Rp today was toasty.
Just had my first session with my new glacier gloves fleece lined 2mm, model 802. Awesome. Great grip, lots of warmth, great dexterity, no fatigue. I've tried a couple others - mystic 2mm gloves and the dakine mitts - and these are the best. Now I just need something for my toes.
I bought 5 mil booties at the surf shop near Second Beach in Newport, work great.
For the past 20 years i have tried lots of alternatives to Glacier gloves and always come back to them for comfort dexterity and warmth.
For the feet have found nothing even close to atans. Was ordering them from uk for years but now isthmus imports them. I use 3 mm through the winter for good feel for board and straps, plently warm if you put an extra velcro strap on to prevent flushing
Thx for the rec. Atan it is.
had my first session with my new Atan booties. killer. i love how they feel on the board, almost like being barefoot. Also warm and comfortable. i'm very pleased.
I just tried Kristof's new Glacier Gloves and ended up buying them from him... exactly what I was looking for! Thanks everyone!
