When I took my 3-day lessons/camp with Ty Luckett in NC a couple years ago, my hands got pretty chewed up in 3-days of kiting 4-5 hours/day. I don't want blisters to cut any of the kiting short on this upcoming trip, so I'm thinking about taking some type of gloves. I'm considering taking an old pair of full finger mountain bike gloves and either using them as-is or cutting the tips at a 3/4 type length. Would this work? Or, should I just pony up and spend $20-$25 for a pair of legit sailing gloves? I've noticed that alot of the sailing specific gloves have special gription material on the palms. Would the leather/synthetic leather on the mtb gloves just get too slippery when wet? Anyone have any experience with any of this? Thanks!

Full Finger Sailing Gloves

You can go with sailing gloves but I think you will be fine without them. Have gone 6 days in a row a couple of times and its not your hands that go, it tends to be your core and neck muscles that get worked over. So make your flabdominals stronger in order to prepare for the adventure.

ATLAS FIT Gloves. They look

ATLAS FIT Gloves. They look just like the blue or green gardening gloves. Alot of times you can pick them up at a hardware store. They cost 4 bucks and they are great. Cut of the finger tips with a pair of scissors for ease of motion. Bring two pairs and you will be sorted. Top Olympic Sailors swear by these cheapos fantasticos.

I second that suggestion.

I second that suggestion. Those gloves will hold up well and give you plenty of feel.

Thanks for the info, guys! I've already started working on my "flabdominals" and will look for the Atlas Fit gloves. Can't wait for this trip!

Gloves?

Unlike windsurfing where you tear apart your hands manipulating the boom, if you are getting blisters kiting you are working the bar way to much, resulting in oversteering of your kite or just self induced stress... No need to death grip a kite as the pressure should be in your hook, it really only takes your pinky fingers to turn a kite... I shred my hands wave sailing (windsurfing) and blow out my back and abs kiting....

Yeah, I probably don't

Yeah, I probably don't "white-knuckle" the bar or give it the "death grip" I did when I first started, but given the potential once-in-a-lifetime-ness of this trip, I'd hate to have something like mostly preventable raw, open blisters be the thing that reduces the amount of time and fun I can have kiting. Maybe I'll hide a pair of those Atlas Fit gloves in my bag and stealthily pull them out if the hands prove to be the weak link.
