Hatteras Fall trip - Columbus Day Weekend

Eric and I were talking yesterday at Dog about a possible long-weekend trip to Hatteras in October. It would look something like fly in Friday night after work; kite Saturday, Sunday, Monday morning, and fly back Monday night. Both Delta and Airtran have really cheap direct flights and I've never been charged extra for gear on either airline. We could rent mostly cheap cars and a couple SUVs for kite point if there was a NE. Eric thinks we can get a great rate in Kitty Hawk Waves village condos. I did a trip like this last year staying at Watermans's and had great wind every day.

columbus day weekend? Was that what we were talking about? Or some long weekend in the fall. If we did it on a long weekend we could either not have to take anytime off, or take one day off and make it a four day weekend.
If we get some numbers and a preferred weekend I can reach out to KHK or Real. Although you can also do motel rooms for cheap...
I think this trip is better in small numbers though. As many people as want can come but no massive organizing effort. People can group up 4-8 people and make their own arrangements

TO bring this back to life. Just looked at flights. South west is 150 each way with a stop. But searching expedia I found Delta to have a round trip ticket leaving from boston to norfolk the thursday October 6th 7:30pm so after work returning mid day Tuesday the 11th for $220 round trip. Seems pretty cheap.
Would then need a rental and place to stay.
thoughts?
Anyone know is the wind pretty consistently good that time of year?

I took that Delta flight for
I took that Delta flight for the Hatteras trip. There is also Airtran into Newport News which is a bit further, less reliable, but cheaper and also direct.
I've done 2 fall trips to Hatteras, (1) Sept 27-30 2009, and (2) Oct 4-7 2010.
(1) Had 2/4 days with great NE wind.
(2) Had 4/4 days with great NE/NW wind.
It can also go SW in the fall..NE is just how I hit it. Only real danger is hurricanes sacking the whole trip.
Rental cars are pretty easy...we should probably rent half SUVs in case we need to go to kite point in a NE.
Should we just see how much the KHK condos would be?

I tried looking on their website it wasnt working. I can email them. We also can look into motels and house rentals. I think for cars we should keep it simple and rent for our group. SO say four of us we get one big suv.
I think the accommodations is the one x factor not sure how much that is going to tally to. but As long as its reasonable I think we should be able to sneak the trip for 700 bucks maybe?

That sounds reasonable. Last year I stayed in Waterman's, which for a 2bdrm condo is 300 a night, a 3drm is maybe 400...so 300-400 for lodging, 200 for a flight, and 100 for rental car makes about 700 total.

There is so much inventory in the off season you ought to get a much better price than that for equal if not better accommodations, unless you are really in 'the scene' at Real.

Right, I was just using that as a comparison. However, even that time of year, it's tough to find a realty company to rent a house for a long weekend. Last year I was taking my mom on a trip and wanted to stay somewhere nice.

Are there houses that will let us book for Friday - Monday/Tuesday? When I tried to do something similar last time, they would only open houses for weekend rentals like 10 days before.

I will email details but we can rent the place for a week starting on friday, although I found one that would start on thursday and just leave early. Its still cheaper then any other option. We can also stay at a motel but they are kind of sleazy looking and still the same price

Hatteras fall trip
Keep me posted, I am interested.
Columbus day weekend is a long weekend in the fall, Oct 11th or something. Could also look at Veterans day in early Nov, but that is getting a bit chilly.
