Hatteras post Irene

For everyone that has fall trips planned..let's hope they get that road open soon.
A repeat of Isabel. The road was rebuilt by thanksgiving or so.
"NCDOT is currently developing preliminary designs for each of the design options under consideration for projects R-3116A (Ocracoke) and R-3116B (Hatteras Village). Environmental studies to quantify and document the potential impacts to natural resources, local communities and the Outer Banks are also underway. The results of these studies will be published in environmental documents that will be available to the public for comment."
It's sounding like these projects may take longer than any previous wash-outs they've had.
It looks like they may need to build a bridge up by Pea Island (saw comment on forum talking about this, not in any way set in stone).
Ben,
I really like that thought. I am wondering what peoples thoughts are. What if we put together a weekend event on the cape. An OBX Irene relief fundraiser type deal. Combine a weekend of kiting, demos, bbq, etc and see if we can raise some money. Would people be interested?
Would be yet another distraction from work for me but with some help this could be a great gesture to a place we all love and visit.

Its pretty impossible to imagine this when you think back to May when we were all driving over New Inlet and getting jazzed for a week of riding. Reports are saying Avon got hit really hard and some of the worst came when the winds shifted west and the sound swell pushed through to the ocean causing the breaches. I can't imagine the houses we stayed in are looking too good right now.

Perhaps we could organize a Masskiting donation.
