Hurricane Kiting Sunday
Hey guys, so if the forecast does what it looks like it's gonna do I'm going out at Nelson beach here in Plymouth. If it is east and nuking and anyone who is confident enough and has a small kite can feel free to join. Obviously this could be a total blowout but I'll be there.
Thanks for the invite. You can count on me.
As much as I don't like the fact that my name has become a bit of a kiteboarding joke (http://bit.ly/p18ybm), I don't want to see a Jean or Travis t either.
Hey, I didn't know that you were famous! So somebody named Kevin launched themsleves into a building? You should wear the t-shirt.
The interview where he has the speech impediment is more interesting and you can clearly see how the media painted this guy. There was some talk on FKSA when Kevin got interviewed about how the news organization edited a lot of the interview. Don't beleive everything you see on the news!
He refused to speak to any reporters because he had signed an exclusivity deal with Inside Edition or some shit. I think he made some money on the deal.
Somehow I had a feeling you would be the author of this post before I even clicked on it, Travis.
Go big, be safe.
What size kite do you use for 70+?
Anyone buy an Epic Tutor yet? Could be the perfect chance to use it.
I show up with my camera but not my kites. Travis give me a shout. Lets grab brew.
Thinking the same thing. Will most definitely sit this one out, bt would love to come shoot, too! Can you PM me the location?
Just dont wear your masskiting t-shirt. Thats all we need if something goes wrong!
Check this out!!!!
Storm track is now showing we will get tropical force winds and groundswell ~ perfect wave riding conditions. Don't let the news media scare you into believing it's an apocalypse. Kevin is a moron, please don't compare him to me. The biggest challenge will be evading the authorities who will have the knee jerk reaction to close the beach, like they did last Labor Day, when we had to play cat and mouse with the men in green riding ORV's at Horseneck. We succeeded and had the best riding conditions EVER...
Jean I would never compare you to that dude. My message was simply to be careful. I've enjoyed our forum conversations and appreciate your wind advice, and hope to meet you in person someday soon.
Me too!
We will see what comes of IRENE, but if it does hold inland with the eye passing around pittsfield/springfield that leaves it west of us...Just remember the eastern side of the storm is always the strongest, hoping for ridable conditions, safe harbor for my boat, and that no tree falls on my car!
Jean/Travis please keep me posted.. I am on cape but eager to get out riding. Had one of best sessions today
I'm a little nervous about Nelson St at high tide, 11:30. especially super high tide. Might do Revere early or late depending on how things look in the AM.
Be safe man. We almost had a guy die at dog beach last fall in a gusty non hurricane day. Gusts to 60 and 70 is a lot of wind.
Anyone thinking of going to nahant or revere early tomorrow morning? In the early hours (6am?) it may not be too windy? Should be decent waves and medium tide.
Other option might be late in the day depending on how fast the storm moves out.
Looking at radar this morning... will try for afternoon at revere if not too windy.
just a word of advice for those who don't know: if you are going to kite a tropical storm doing it after the storm is pulling away is much smarter than while it is still approaching. on approaching strong wind can ramp up really quickly going from kiteable (for some) 30-40 to dangerous 50+ in minutes as a squall line approaches.
That's why I was thinking 4 PM Revere might be a good call
IKitesurf shows stronger wind late in the day. It's all a question of timing. gotta see updates in the AM.
Aren't the winds bound to turn a bit westerly once the storm passes north of us?
Thanks for the word of caution.

It was too strong and gusty for me. I was on the water around the same time though, in P Bay, windsurfing. Ooops, can I say that word on this site?!
It was stupid gusty but fun. They kicked us out around 12:30. Then I heard another crew got on the water right after we left.
Solo sesh at revere from 6:30-8a. No kite loops in 60+ gusts, but good 7m riding nonetheless. Couldn't believe I was the only one there.

I'm still planning on heading to Nelson around noonish. Looks pretty rideable now. I've been out in 50mph winds on my seven and still had plenty of room for gusts so I'm not really too worried about being overpowered. It's a 5th line C so I can totally depower it if necessary. Hopefully we get a few people out there. Jean, good luck in the waves, you're crazy man those swells should be pretty epic. Good luck guys. Stay safe. Know your limits.
