Ice conditions in NH?
Anyone know if the lakes to the north (Sunapee/Winni) are close to being safe? Should be plenty cold the next few days, a bit of snow hitting the mountains this weekend, and the winds look strong int he coming days.
Looking for the same info. Does anyone have a source for ice conditions? Lakes seem to be the best locations for snowkiting, but I have yet to locate a source to determine if the ice is safe yet. It would be good to know before a long drive only to find open water or 1/2 inch thick ice. Temps have been cold for a while so it should be good soon if not already.
Winnepesaukee (SP?) Web cams show many areas on the lake. Moultonborow bay looks good right now some snow mobile tracks in snow there, though some of those guys like to skim open water
No one will make a public statement that ice is "safe" because it invites all sorts of liabilities. It's best to see if you can find measurements of ice thickness. This has been a mild winter, but Winni ice has been rather thick in years past. Flyers hold a fly-in some years where they all land on the ice.
I'm getting reports on Facebook that Squam and Winne are good right now.
Is there snow on the surface or ice?
i was around alton bay over the weekend and ice seems pretty thick. There were a few trucks, suvs, fourwheelers, and a ton of ice fisherman.
there was a little snow on top (maybe 2-3") but not sure how much of it is left now.
I'm going to try going up on Mon, Moultonboro web cam looks good. Any takers?
I'd really like to get my first snowkiting experience this winter! I have the kite flying down pretty good now just need a place to get on my board. Might try for wini this weekend too.
Use the smallest kite you have, I'm seeing gusts to 30 and very hard surface. When it's hard and fast like this you don't need much wind at all, my smallest is a 12m and that may be too much
Squam?
We're supposed to have some snow saturday and then windy and cold sunday. Maybe make for a decent weekend to get out.
I have a 4m snow kite which might be plenty if there is hard ice and little snow on top of it.... in 25 mph+ like the forecast says...
My concern is the windchill factor, accuweather is saying -6°F as the High temp (including wind chill) for Sunday..... I can't decide if this sounds fun to me or not. I'm thinking not right now but could be convinced otherwise ...
i have a 5 meter ozone frenzy.. would that be good for this weekend??
also if someone lets me know where we launch from or where we could meet, etc i'd probably be in for this weekend
any update on if anyone is heading out this weekend?
I won't be free until Monday, I know that sounds weird....
Im not so sure I would go out on the ice. To each his own, but the lake I love on in NH still has open water on it on the bigger parts. Even if it is frozen over im sure there are some areas where the ice is thin. Other parts it might be fine though. Just my 2 cents.
Wind looks great for Winni tomorrow (Mon) relativly light but with hard surface that is just right:) Big kites and sharp edges!! Will be in Merideth early but probly heading to Moultonboro, from the web cams that looks the best. Any one been to Winni this weekend?
Thanks for the input:)
Jean and I had Winni to our selves today and we found the only powder stash in New England:)
Some aerial shots of Winni from last Friday.

Gorgeous! Watch out for that open water!
You guys still considering holding a snowkite event this season in nh?
Not ruling it out, though having it on ice is a bit brutal. I think it may be very informal as in: Yo! Conditions are good at Winni this weekend, who's in? Bob and I found a very nice spot to launch from on the Easter shore. There is an event this weekend near Albany, but I think you'd have to like ice.

I'm going to try for winni or sunapee this weekend
