I can't make the snow kite trip as I'm traveling for work this week, but if anyone is in the Islamorada FL area this coming weekend and wants to kite the flats or nearby kite spots give a shout out or PIM. I'm not super familiar with the area but please chime in if you have any info or experience with this area, advice on kite spots, accommodations etc much appreciated. I know Masskiters are a well traveled group. Forecast is looking optimistic right now...

Islamorada

We stayed in one of the villas at Chesapeake Beach Resort (www.chesapeake-resort.com/) in Islamorada last April and had a blast. You can launch from the beach in front of the Chesapeake or walk to the next property over and launch at Whale Harbor. Great flat water riding with sand bars and generally waist deep water everywhere you go. We rode the beaches and also took a boat trip to a sandbar and I would definitely recommend paying the extra money to get out on a boat. It'll extend your riding time and get you into better riding conditions guaranteed and get you kiting in any wind direction. If you have enough time, make the 1.5 hour drive down to key west and charter a boat to the flats. If you make the drive, stop at Keys Fisheries (www.keysfisheries.com/) in Marathon for lunch and get the lobster rueben. Enjoy the trip. We'll be in Key West the following weekend to go out with the kitehouse.

Islamorada!

Whale Harbor is a great place to ride but now costs $10 a day to ride there. Anne's beach, 10 miles south is pretty epic for all abilities and FREE. The only way I can see needing a boat would be if the winds were off shore, but then the sandbar straight off sure is super gusty and everyone rides on the gulf side.

The 2 shops in town are:

oTHErside Boardsports
83292 Overseas Hwy.
Islamorada, Florida Keys
www.othersideboardsports.com

located just across the street and south 1/4 miles from Whale Harbor and is the local favorite.

Seven kiteboarding is

Seven kiteboarding is horrible, guys at the otherside are great and much more organized if you need to take a boat trip. They also take you to better locations if you have to go by boat. Was there in November and kited 5 out of 7 days. Bring all your kites I used my 7,10 and 14. I stayed at the Hampton Inn next to whale harbor. If you are a guest at the hotel you can launch from there. Recommend wearing booties. Have fun!
