Kiteboarding Safety Issue: Dog Bites???
Dogs apparanently don't like kiteboarders. While kiting in Pine Point's light wind last night, I dropped my kite in the surf and was unable to ralauch. Frustrated, I gathered the kite and ran it up onto the beach. Then suddendly, out of nowhere, an unleashed dog charged from behind and and chomped into my leg! I know kiting has many risks, but now dogs, WTF?!?
Shocked at this random event, I didn't know what to say to the puzzled dog owner who ran up and secured her beast. The bite hurt, but I was honestly more concered about resetting my gear and getting back kiting than scolding the careless owner or inquiring about rabies shots. I'd figured my wetsuit/shorts provided some protection, but when I got home I realized the dog had actually broken skin. Hopefully I won't become rabid...
So beware of unleashed dogs on the beach. They're confused by kiters or I've seen them freak out at guys launching and landing. I've also heard horses get spooked by kites, but don't see too many of these around.
Holy crap, that is one of my worst fears, I worry about that more than shark bites!
Should have at least asked to see their license for their name and address. I doubt that very many well cared for dogs are rabid, but it could definitely get infectected and put your ass in the hospital... Especially if you went back out in that water with an open wound. Neosporin the hell out of it.
wow, If anything I would think getting back in the ocean would help against infections. The seawater seems to have amazing healing powers every time I am injured.
Did you even have time to try and defend or were you not paying atention?

If it were me I would have at least got her phone number
I would have hooked my chicken loop to its collar and walked away with my middle finger raised in the air.
maybe dogs are confusing kiters with plovers...
Salt is good to help close a wound, but ocean water has a lotta bacteria in it, So it's easy to get infected. Especially around Boston harbor.
We all do it, but it's not the best idea to go in the ocean with an open wound. I got a bad infection on my foot from cutting it on some coral.
I think the risk of infection offsets the benefits of the saltwater.
