Kitestorm 2010, Burlington VT
Not sure what everyone's plans are, but just looked at the forecast for up north and it looks like Lake Champlain should actually have some decent snow by this weekend. A snow storm this year (tomorrow's) is actually making it north of mass, what do ya know!?!?!?

But I'm staying up there this weekend anyway with a friend (non-kiter who will be just up there to ski), not at the Windjammer (Masskiting hotel of choice and where the after party will be), but just a mile or so away. If the conditions on the lake suck, or there is no wind, then i'll going skiing too (got some cheap tix on craigslist for sumggler's notch), so ill be up there regardless. Just wanted to check everyone's plans for the weekend. I'm going to head up Friday after work, makes getting there early Saturday much easier...unless of course you're a fan of waking up at 5am and driving 3.5 hours? haha. Burlington is a fun town, we should have masskiting hit up church street one night. anyone who has been there knows what im talking about.
Yup, looks like it'll be a great weekend!! we have plenty of room, and do not have to commit to any rooms till Thursday.
So far we have at least 3 suites, and another room or two. As much as I'd rather stay at the lake during the day if there is no wind, BBQ and just hang out, but if the wind sucks and we are so close, we should go to Jay Peak!
Shane and I are heading up on Friday. Id recommend that to everyone so we have early options for the morning.
Hmmm, I haven't heard back from that many people, so I may end up cancelling a few of the suites. Let me know if you are planning on going
Jermy, I'm in!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOO What's the plan, can I ride with you? WHo else is going? Should we take the RV? Let paaaaartyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!
No way!! you must've got all your stuff done, ya?
I *think* Shane and I will head up early on Friday. You available?
Can do Friday after work
Hey guys, here's a quick vid from Monday at Sandbar. We got zilch for snow from this last weather "event" so come prepared with sharp edges. You can see the ice heave in the background, just like we had last year.
That doesnt look like we should kite. I'll bring sticks and pucks you guys bring the blood.
haha tht's awesome. I don't have skates now, but that makes me want to rent them!
Where's the video from this snowstorm?
No snow making? MASSkiting drinking event!! Da bahs... Lets cross the fingers... Not happy to see no snow but I have full intention to go still.

If enough people look at it, maybe it will improve.
is that for real??
Oh well, I'm still going. btw, who has the winch on their truck??
I'm sorry, count me out...

I was surprised to see the Forecast... Let it snow!
Hi guys. I'm canceling some of the rooms today, so you have until noon to figure it out.
I'm heading up toward where Kitestorm is taking place tonight. Probably not going to ride there until saturday based on the snow. Looked at the weather report for a couple places more east, and probably gonna be kiting over there tomorrow. Kind of in the middle of no where, but looks good.
Here's the area:

think you meant west
my bad...west
Things are looking up! We got a "dusting" last night on the lake, but that's all we needed to change things around! It got into the mid 30's temp today and it made the dust totally edgeable. Not good for boards, but great for skis. The surface should now allow any new snow to stay put and not blow off. Tomorrow winds 15-25 and currently Saturday 10-15. If we get another inch it will be good for snowboards too.
See you up here
oh very cool! most of us are heading up on Saturday now... save some wind for us. And one more inch! one more inch!
Great info!! Exactly what I wanted to know and hear!!
Gentlemen,
It's SNOWING up here, and the lake should pick up a couple of inches throughout the day, with a bit more tonight. Good wind is in the forecast too, so goodtimes this weekend!
I just cried! Not for long but I did.... I CANT WAIT!!!!!
I am very happy that my wife is coming. Then my cousin and his girlfriend too! Then today I asked my brother and he was stoked. Then my mom and dad decided why not! So I got another room and now with wind and snow this is really gonna be a blast!
Saturday was an all-out waiting for wind event. Flysurfer 19's were the only kites flying. Then at 3:30 wind picked up to a solid 10 knots NW and everybody still waiting for wind got in 1 hr of riding. Surface was smooth ice with 1 inch of sloppy snow on top. Fast for skis and edgeable for snowboards.
Sunday there was wind all day. I would say it was a solid NW 13 knots and would pick-up at times to 18 knots (maybe). But the consistency of the winds and the speed of the ice with < 1 inch of windswept snow made this session the best by far this year. I was riding at 8:30 a.m. with my 9m initially and then my 12m. Endless miles of riding with no-one around. For me that is the appeal of riding at the Sandbar. When you add the smooth winds, it makes it all well worth it. I had my floatiest jumps with my 12m. As a beginner jumping with skis on ice, it was good to know the winds will back you up. After landing a dozen jumps you forget about the hardness of the ice. No spills for me this time, but I can tell it's easy to screw up when you learn.
Took part in one race (they held 6) and learned a lot. The course had a "getting upwind" component followed by a "racing downwind" component. How fast you can get to the upwind marker is the key. Here are some of the lessons I took from the race. If you are new to racing it might be a good idea to see what the pack leaders are doing on the course. Chances are they have done this before. Don't start too far downwind because you can never catch up. It might be better to start at the end of the pack (if you don't like getting squeezed together with the pack), but just next to the start marker and not downwind of it. Go as far as you can on your best tack upwind. It is a fine line between going fast and making maximum upwind progress. I was on my 12m and was well powered for the race. For the downwind racing component I passed a few folks with smaller foils, but as I passed downwind of them with the kite low to the ground one of the riders decided to sine his kite into one of my lines. We continued on and nothing bad happened. The rule says upwind kite high, downwind kite low. But should the upwind kiter raise his kite as I am passing faster downwind or should I have over-taken them upwind ? I could not have passed them upwind. Maybe go a bit more downwind, but then would lose too much ground. Ah-well it was a lot of fun to see what you can do.
I have some pics and video, maybe will create a session report later.

Thanks for posting the video.. Sounds like your guys had some fun up there
Hope to make the next year trip this weekend was hard between family and work...
Nice Paul! I still can't believe the wind turned on at night. That must've been Zeb out there on the Ozone foil? Good times.
Im trading my flexi in for a one of those donut kites!! I bet there real good for kite loops.
it's almost like 3D glasses... one minute, you are like "damn, look though the hole, it;e soooo trippy" and the next minute you are like "wow that's the lamest thing ever "

Just booked the place im staying (an apartment with bedroom, kitchen, and living room w pullout couch for $25 a night...how can you go wrong), so ill be heading up after work friday. Burlington forecast looked like possibly snow every day, so lets keep our fingers crossed. I'm looking forward to doing a 50 mile downwinder. haha.
