Lake Sunapee
Surface conditions are dicey around here. Don't know if it's any better up North. but I'm taking my daughter snowboarding this Saturday to Mount Sunapee. While she takes the class in the morning, I'm going to try kiting on the Lake. Any Masskiters interested in exploring this spot?
perhaps jean. well be in touch...is the lake frozen enough?
ME! But I have to be back to WAWA by 3:30 so I will drive myself:)
I talked to a woman last week and all is safe, just watch out for the "bubblers" which are water pumps to circulate the water around docks so the ice does not damage the docks.
It looks like there is a beach right across from the ski area entrance with tons of parking, maybe this where we can park?
I would LOVE to try this with u guys. I am yet to kite-ski. Hope its good for an 11m. and hope my bladder repair was successful.
too true. ill bring some beer. o and maybe a fishing pole so if my bladder doesnt hold well just drill a hole and well have some dinner!
Thought I would just bring this up again, I am still going will be there early 8:00amish
What day are you guys riding Lake Sunapee?
I am not quite sure how this works bc I have never done it before but is the light wind forecast an issue. NOAA for Sunapee for Sat:
Mostly sunny, with a high near 25. Wind chill values as low as -2. North wind between 6 and 10 mph.
Is 6-10mph enough for an 11m kite on a frozen lake?
I am excited to try this out...
Rafi when the surface is hard and fast it does not take much wind at all to get going, sometimes the hardest part is getting going, but once you are moving there is no resistance so you really fly! With too much wind you can't hold an edge, so not good for a snowboard, and if there is patchy snow lots of fun carving on the snow:) Fresh sharp edges will make much better, I will bring a file and give a quick touch up if you need it.
I went snowboarding at Mount Sunapee today with a couple friends. Snow was full on hard pack, firm and fast. Luckily the sun was out in force, which progressively softened the surface, making it less dicey. We rode from 9-2.
Great "little big" mountain, plenty there to keep me challenged the whole day. The sun bowl side had very nice early am sun exposure so we played there for the first half of the morning before moving on to the core runs. The 603 terrain park spanned three trails and was immaculately groomed. It's chock full of hits and rails galore. The south peak learning area looked to get the best all day sun.
Overall conditions up there were not stellar, as they got the same rain we did awhile back. I had a great day and all but will not be returning to that area until some natural snow falls.
This was not a kiting trip, but I did check out the lake from a few vantage points. Lake Sunapee is mostly ice with very little snow coverage. I would look elsewhere. I saw more promising spots on the ride up, most land based.
You guys should consider riding up to North Conway, NH.
I spoke with Zebulon (crabnebula) yesterday over the phone, he lives in North Conway and he told me theres plenty of snow around. He was able to get out a couple of days ago to score a pretty nice session. He also told me that there are a few spots in Maine right near the border where he gives lessons.... Just a thought.
I would be up for exploring, but from what I can tell the lake might be a wash....
Still planning on going in the AM see you there:) Make sure your skis are sharp
Well it was a nice day for a drive:) Got there around 8:30 and the ice was so lumpy and bumpy from the frozen slush and only about a wheelbarrow full of snow so I went on tour scouting out spots and the best I found were right hear in Hubbardston. Jean asked me to go skiing since we were there but I opted not to:( So once again I learned not to go searching for more when you have it right here in your own yard.
Tug hill.....is the place. North Conway area is OK but with the solar evaporation of the snow things are certainly thinning out..
By the way your looking at 30 hours or so and and a small plane ride to drive and fly to the artic circle try the sub article circle...
