There is snow in the forecast, with a sunny day in store with moderate winds on Sunday. Bob and I might give it a shot at Melvin Village.

5M foil will work great if the breeze is strong enough. Do you have inflatables?

Keep me in the loop!

I've got new ski boots I haven't tried this year, got to get out there at least once!

I need to sharpen my skis, given the recent conditions, I'm thinking this might be a priority before getting out there on sunday.

Should I try to sharpen saturday night locally (only time available for me), or do you think there is a ski shop in that area I can get a quick sharpening sunday morning?

Do you guys have an ice screw?

Bob and I have ice screws.

Bob and I have ice screws. Ideally, you grab a moment to buy yourself one at REI this weekend. They are super handy to have. The other piece of equipment I find extremely useful is a weight bag. Any old tote bag or a kite bag with a gallon of water inside or dive weights of something. That's the biggest challenge in using inflatable kites on snow is that they fly away. We will also bring a grill, get there early, stay late, and have a cook out. Bring meat, beers, chips and we can do it Masskiting style!

hellz yeah

I'll be flying foils, I'd rather loop an 8m to get power than park a 12m inflatable (on snow). Just my preference.

but yeah, still want to have an ice screw. I have sandbags, and will bring them stock full @ 20 lbs, should hold the kite enough for a sexy back stall landing.

roger that on beer & junk food.....

It'll be real rough on my board to get an edge on the ice, but I'll give it a shot!

Do we have a time and exact place yet? I've never been up to Melvin village so I'm not sure where to go exactly.

Wind bumped up to be in to low 20's now

and have confirmed that area is sheer ice? I'm okay with ski slope type ice (def wear a helmet), but ice-rink type ice would suck......

Wait.... I could bring my ice skates !!! haha

I'm thinking beer as a 2nd backup

Just looked at the web cams

Just looked at the web cams and they got snow and there are fisherman on the lake, so ice is safe, though there will be open water but they are compleatly avoidable. We park on Lake Rd off of rt 109 right by a church, hopfuly there will be room not sure how many fisherman will be there.

Skis are a better option over

Skis are a better option over a snowboard. Chris and I should get there by 9:30-10 AM. We need to be prepared for gusty conditions. Rig small!

Sunny, with a high near 29. West wind between 13 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph.

rig small?

How small? I'll be stopping by Piches in Gilford to rent skis (I don't trust myself on a snowboard) at 8:30 and will then drive around the lake to Melvin Village. I should just kite across the lake Smile

If gusty, I'll be choosing between between

my 4 and 8 m. My 4m is designed for high wind gusty conditions, it self stabilizes and has auto-relaunch (!!!). Make sure you have a kite that has lots of depower, so if it is gusty you can work "with" the wind instead of fighting it constantly.

You could potentially ride my 4m if I am on my 8 tomorrow.

If its not gusty, I'm riding a big big kite Wink

my recommendation is to just bring all your gear, and we'll figure it out when we get there, because you never know!

The webcams were looking good

The webcams were looking good this morning. There was a few people out there and it looked to be covered in snow. Hopefully it stays that way for tomorrow.

Sounds like my 5 meter should be set for tomorrow. now i just have to worry about how good my board will do. If i knew how to ski i'd grab a pair, but learning to ski and snowkiting for the first time, at the same time, probably wouldn't be the best idea!

I'll probably get there between 930-1000 as well, house is only about 30 minutes away.

Something tells me I'll be in for a world of hurt tomorrow with my 9m C kite which probably has #%$@ for depower. See you guys tomorrow morning.

2006 Slingshot Fuel with a 5th line. I'll start her off depowered as much as possible and will see if it's junk. Flew it on the beach in 15 with some gusts and was able to handle it without ever trying to depower.

Well at least I'll be wearing a GoPro so if it's out of control you guys will be able to laugh about it later while watching the video.

Decent webcam here with time lapse view http://www.mingecovecam.com/

And one here showing tracks which look more like skis than snowmobile: http://www.lakesregionwireless.net/bay/netcam.jpg

Very interesting the flags in this pic are slack, no wind there today? Snow looks great and with cold temps should be firm and adheard(sp?) to the ice:) See you in the AM

tracks

definitely snowmobile track on the moutlonboro cam and the flag has been wind whipped to shreds.

Wunderground says it's blowing 22 from the west in Gilford right now. Ski shop said they got 5 inches of wet stuff in Gilford so I doubt it's been blown around despite the high winds.

See you guys in the am.

We'll have at least one grill - mine is packed but we'll have to do some engineering to stabilize it. Made for the boat (rod holder) but I've used a 3' piece of PVC buried in snow when hiking. If we can make a mound of snow we'll be all set. Bring the dogs and whatever else you got.

I don't want to be presumtious, but are we using "epic?"

Sure felt it to me. I know because I feel the pain in my windburnt face from smiling.
