Hey Kiters,

Most of you know the disaster in the Gulf region on the news at every minute seems like repetative nightmare. I thought we could start a discussion on the subject, on ways we can possibly help and also the possibility of the oil slicks and sludge affecting us. After all we do kite on the ocean and by the latest report oil has shown up in Pensacola, Florida making it's way towards the tip of Florida. The latest report this morning indicated that the oil could creep around the tip off the keys and travel up the gulf stream affecting East coast beaches. I don't know to what extent or if that is true but there's the possibility that looms in the back of my mind.

Yesterday while getting my hair cut I learned that human hair is being used to absorb the oil that runs along coast line in the gulf. One pound of human hair can absorb 1 quart of oil in 1 minute and can be reused up to 100 times for the same job. The salon chain (The Hair Cuttery) is shipping off all of the hair they cut that ends up on the floor to be used in tea bag like sacs to float in the water to absorb the oil. Who would have thought that waste hair could do that? I certainly did not but it sounds like it sure beats dumping chemical dispersants into the water.

I was thinking that maybe all of us could help even with minimal effort or more. Sounds corny to get a hair cut at a specific place but what if every hair salon and barber shop in the country sent human hair to be used in this method? How many times a month do you get your hair cut? What if we can spread this word to other kite surfing forums and surfing forums? What if we all got a hair cut on the same dates?

That is just one idea but I think we need to pool ideas and step to the plate to help get into this movement because this affects us all in one way or another but affects us even more as kite boarders. The Surfrider Foundation's (www.surfriderfoundation.org) key mission: The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. They already have information up on their website but I really think we should be doing something as a community. So Masskiters how can we help and what can we do? Ideas, suggestions, brainstorming is greatly needed to turn this into some action.

Nice posting

Skipper, Nice posting here.. But I have to give my 2 cents first..

I just can't believe with all the technology we have today all the money BP made it in the past decades and they can't fix this gush.. This is outrageous...

I'm not a scientist but dude lets be realistic here this is totally a mismanaged company and one thing I would say I won't buy any fuel from BP for a very long time and I'll definitely spread the word to other to boycott this company and I really believe that this company need to stay in business and pay for all the damage that is causing to the local area and many other people/family in the world...

I work for an Information Management company and if we sell a product to our customer and in the end the product doesn't provided what is suppose too my we are in trouble and we will pay for the consequences...

I just don't understand why the OIL industry don;t get the same penalties as other business in the US?? Maybe someone else in the forum could help me understand the political side behind all of this....

So I'll do my part and pass on the word about the human hair and try to help as much as possible..

I want to believe that something with this magnitude never happen again!!!

Cya

Sounds like the thing to do

While venting and flaming seems the natural thing to do I had the idea of being part of a solution rather than be another voice of frustration on the internet. We can do both but I think our frustration can be turned into action. I'll leave the politicians/BP and Haliburton etc to flaming since they are full shit anyway. You know God got their bodily orafices backwards because it all comes out the smelling like bullshit anyway.

When all else fails

....action must be taken by those willing to do so. Waiting around to let BP clean the mess up is not an effective plan for the environment as people loose their livelihoods, animals are killed, coast lines are soiled and an eco system destroyed. Right BP's efforts to stop the leak involve syphoning as much oil as they can onto barges and tankers That still doesn't stop the leak! It just put oil into their tankers to be separated and refined while the rest of it leaks still. In the meantime coast line is destroyed and the slick will affect us. Hair booms seem to be much more effective from that video demonstration. If the Coast Guard is not accepting hair for hair booms then it should be put into the hands of those willing to use it. Sorry Paul but the Coast Guard should be accepting all options and the cost of this effort is minimum as compared to what will be spent for the clean up. At least it is being stock piled and is a matter of time when they will start using it. Of course that is just one method and I know is not the magic wand to make it all go away but it is a start.

We need to do our part and not rely on a layered beaucracy to take pictures and express outrage on camera. BP is a part of an industry tightly knit into the layers of our governement beaucracy.
