MassKiting weekend on Martha's Vineyard
THIS TRIP WAS IN 2010. ALTHOUGH I APPRECIATE THE RENEWED INTEREST AND PEOPLE SENDING MESSAGES AS OF 6/6/2011 THERE IS NO PLAN TO REPEAT THIS TRIP. ALTHOUGH WE WOULD ALL LOVE TO THE HOUSE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR USE.
MASSKiting takes over Martha's Vineyard
This July we will be holding the first, hopefully annual, Mass Kiting Martha's Vineyard weekend. Join Mass Kiting for a weekend of Kiting, Drinking, BBQs, Pub Crawls, and good old fashion fun while living the island life.
When: July 23rd to the 25th (Friday to Sunday)
Where: Chappaquiddick Island, Martha's Vineyard.
Activities: Kiting, Drinking, Beach Games, Jet Skis, Sailing, Surfing, Wake Boarding, Pub Crawls, Scavenger Hunts, and Sunshine
The plan is to head over to the Island Friday. If wind and weather cooperate we will be trying to organize a crossing from Falmouth area to Vineyard Haven on the Island. However this is totally weather dependent and will only be for intermediate to advanced riders. Support boats will be organized as well as some local support from the Vineyard Haven Harbor Master.
If people can take Friday off there will be a group of people going over mid day. Everyone else is welcome to come over at their convenience. We will be able to help transport gear to the island in the cars we are bringing over. There will be some free parking available in Falmouth and people are encouraged to car pool. Once the group is filled specific parking and transportation instructions will be emailed around.
The general plan is to kite as much as possible and let everyone experience the hidden bliss of the island while fully planning for no wind an still having just as good a time! As Johnny D put it, "let kiting ruin my weekend plans"
Kiting activities for the weekend:
Of course kiting will be wind dependent however there are several options and if there is wind we can do them all.
Kite in cape pouge bay. For those who don't know this place is the shit. A huge protected bay plenty of shallow water, flat water everywhere, and you can kite in every wind direction. That being said the area has extremely limited access as you can only get there with an over sands permit, and a 30 minute beach drive, or a boat. We will have both! A sunset session here is a must.
Kite Katama and South Beach. Katama is the southern most part of Edgartown harbor and offers great flat water in any form of southerly breeze. Also the outer side of the beach (south beach) offers large waves and swell. You can get both waves and flat water while showing off your best tricks to the hoard of summer tourists who line the beach.
Down winder from Edgartown light house to cape pouge. It is a simple matter of crossing the outer harbor and you are in flat water paradise.
Kite State Beach. State beach offers great kiting in any kind of easterly and has a lot to offer. Gorgeous flat water in the pond side and waves and open water down winder possibilities on the ocean side. The whole beach stretches several miles so long tacks, island hopping, and down winders are readily available.
There are up island beaches to kite and rock the waves. They require a drive and sometimes parking passes but all is attainable.
Check out the Beaches section for more information on the Island beaches
None Kiting activities:
Of course we hope the wind is nuking but even if it is we cannot kite all night so we need other things to do.
Saturday Beach BBQ:
We will set up on the beach around 5pm so if there is wind people can kite into the sunset and we can party into the night!
Pub Crawl: This will be ready to roll anytime we do not have wind or need a break. There are two towns involved and minimum of 10 bars. No sober drivers needed public transportation is cheap and easy.
Scavenger Hunt: Make no mistake this isn’t an Easter egg hunt this is an adult only event. The list has been compiled and you may have to sign a waiver to participate so get ready.
Sunset Cruise: We should have at least one, if not two, sailboats at our disposal and if the wind is too light to kite we can go on a booze cruise and enjoy the water.
Frisbee Golf Tourney: There is a free Frisbee golf course in the center of the island. All we need is a few discs and a lot of highlife.
General Fun: Jet Skis, charter fishing, surf casting, beach parties, the jaws bridge to jump off, surfing, wildlife tours, great seafood, and 360 degrees of gorgeous beach front.
Accommodations and Cost:
I am opening up my families house to our community and we will be able to stay there. There are four beds, 3 queen or bigger and one double, a couple couches and tons of floor space for air mattresses. There is also ample room to set up tents and the house is in a great spot on the island where we can party like crazy and no one will bother us but we can walk to the beach. Room priority will be given to couples and then the first to pay. You can also sleep on the beach if you like! There will be plenty of room and all the facilities we need to have a blast.
The cost for the weekend will be $75 per person. This will cover most everything. Specifically this will cover the cost of bringing two trucks over to the island, a power boat rental for our kiting and wake boarding excursions, booze, t-shirts, and as much food as possible and possibly jet ski rentals. That being said if food and booze run over our house cash we will split the total bill just like Tug Hill and Hatteras. If there is any money left over it will be refunded fully. I dare you to have this much fun on the Vineyard for less!
Lessons will be available for an additional cost from Mark and Skyhigh Kiteboarding. If you are interested in lessons please let me know so we can get an idea of numbers for him.
This is going to be a great weekend and a chance to experience some of the best kiting spots in Massachusetts. This is taking a lot of advanced planning and money ahead of time so people are expected to pay ahead of time to reserve their spot and refunds will not be given just because the wind forecast doesn’t look good. Wind or no wind we will have an epic weekend.
We have room for around twenty people so get your name in quick!
Lastly things we could use:
JD has volunteered to bring his truck over and we have another truck on the island ready for use. However if anyone else has a four wheel drive vehicle and is willing to drive over we can pay the round trip fee.
Also if anyone has access to a power boat for the crossing or for general fun when we are there and can bring it over to the island we can cut down on the cost for everyone. We will have several whalers and inflatable’s available to us and can rent additional boats as well. For anyone who would be willing to bring a boat over we have two mooring set aside and can raft a number of boats.
To reserve your spot PM me or respond to this thread. Questions? Post em!

I can fit 6 people stuffed in truck when we hit island and toss gear in back if you park in woods hole. Hoping for afternoon delight on Friday when we hit the island, so if there is wind looking to go directly to beach from boat landing.
Fire me a PM or coordinate with Eric willing to make a few boat runs to get people taking ferry with gear if needed.

Not sure if your car is full but if it is I could drive too Woods Hole them drop off my bag on the back and possibly kite gear cause I was told they charge for a board on the ferry
keep me posted in case you have room in the car
I also live in Medford. If there's room I'd be down for car pooling, either from Meford or Falmouth.

We are booked on the 3:45 from woods hole to MV, we can stuff tons of gear in the back of the truck. Might have to drive slow on MV but that usually is how it rolls anyways.

Hey Y'all,
I was reading through your thread and thought this would be a good opportunity to float an idea I proposed to my buddy recently. This friend has the first house to starboard as you're entering Cape Pogue, and he rents it, but only through word of mouth. It's classic and proudly "Old Chappy," meaning sand in the corners, no TV, flush only if necessary, and strictly 4wd access. There are up to three small houses available depending on whether his cousin's place is available and it's ideal for a kite vacation. If I did it right, here's the link. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl Renting this place would require civility and understanding, and somehow I convinced my friend that that's what kiters were all about. Let me know if you're interested. I'm trying to insinuate my own damn self for the 23rd weekend to hook up with y'all, but let me know if this'd be something you're interested in in the future. charlesaford@yahoo.com or cford@thewaterproofingco.com
A good friend of mine, Joe Adelstein, first introduced me to Chappaquiddick Island years ago when I used to cruise around all over the place with my friends on cruising sailboats. His parent have a summer place there. Joe now lives in Tasmania, but as luck would have it, he flies home to MV on the 24th! He plays a mean guitar, so we can add jam session to the long list of activities.
Wasque, so does that mean you can walk to the southside beach? Seems like a kite day there might be easier than motoring to Poge, but I suppose Poge is more of a wind machine. Joe lives on Caleb Pond. I will ask about a boat. I'm pretty sure he's got various types. I will bring percussion instruments, djembe, cow bell, wood block, West African rhythms...

Glad to see the enthusiasm building already!
This is not a guys only weekend anyone is welcome. There are two private bed rooms which I will give couples first priority. If they arnt taken by couples people can fight it out!
Also there is tons of room for tents so that works also
People can send checks to me at,
