Monomoy Island
Thinking of going to Monomoy Island Sunday if the forecast holds. I know you can kite over from Chatham, but I'm thinking of bringing a boat to facilitate carrying lunch, extra gear, etc over there and getting back if the wind dies. I'm assuming Whitey and the lunch seals hang out mainly on the ocean side and we won't be setting up shop right in their midst. Anyone have any helpful advice on this spot?
I never been there but looks like the sharks are pretty active there these days..
If you could go over on a boat I said is the best option
Have fun and keep safe don't try to cross that channel please!
I hear the sharks can smell fear...
A boat is the best option if possible. Just be aware of the tides, there are large flats at low tide that can leave your boat stranded for hours.
Whitey may be on either side but I'm sure you can find some ankle deep water to play in.
Just keep an eye on the tide and have fun!
Monomoy and a boat is great, it can also be a pain.
You have to be careful out there as it is very easy to get stuck (outgoing tide)
There are many places you can get into in high water that are not navicable at lower tides.
There are some good Charts or monomoy, but you have to stay current as it changes all the time.
I get in with a flats boat that draws very little water (inches) and i feel okay, but never 100% confident. You do have to move the boat every now and then to make sure you dont get high and dry.
The farther out you go towards south monomoy the more carefull you have to be.
I got into some BIG waves after a day of relaxing fishing out there that left me shaking for quite some time.
I gained a lot of respect for what looks like an easy place to go by boat.
Best to follow someone with local knowledge.
Be careful and enjoy!
You may want to give Bob Wright a call. He knows his way around the water behind Monomoy.
Below is a quick report on a trip I did with him last year.

Everytime I kite at Hardings I make my way to Monomoy and begin my tack up wind. Sunday I made it to the southern tip of the that little Monomoy Island. While I made it the farthest I have been and kited back in that channel I'd say it is a nice experience for those of us that can make it. I had the intentions of going all the way but the wind died off slowly and I had to trek back. I would have preferred to ride back on the West side of little monomoy but I didn't have enough wind to make it back up through that shallow channel where no boats can go. On my way up I saw a small shark that bolted off like lightening when I came up on him/her basking in about 3-4 feet of water. I saw two seals on the beach and many in the water as I trekked up. Here is a map of my adventure.[img_assist|nid=4692|title=Monomoy Trek|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=480|height=488]
looks awesome!
I was the first to set up Sunday afternoon. A nice elderly lady on the beach down by the pole came up to me and told me about a kiter that was riding thru all the people swiming just east of the marked swimming area. It sounded like this kiter was a co,mplete moron. She said he was spraying swimmers and riding around between them in the shore break. She mentioned that she thought there were beach goers who were going to or did call the police.
I wasn't there Saturday but did anyone witness this jerk about to ruin it for all the responsible kiters? I couldn't believe what she was telling me.
we should find this jerk and ban him before he ruins it for all of us
If you are going to kite out there
Please be aware that that north monomoy and monomoy are both wild life refuge areas, and bird santuarys. most of the time there are Audobon people there observing and giving tours. There is a no fly zone on any land there.
Walking there with a kite will get a lot of bad attention.
Also if you cross over south beach in chatham to the ocean there are large areas that are maked as no access due to nesting terns. Fedral regulations prohibit kite fling any where near terns and plovers.
These three areas have some great kiting. But if you think there is trouble messing with boats and people. Messing with birds will really screw thing up for kiting there and would cause more trouble than we can imagine. So if you go use your head.
The ocean side of south beach is seal central. This is the area that they tagged the great whites in last summer.
And whitey is back.
BtW, I did not touch land at all and was riding the whole time. As I got closest to North Monomoy I was attacked by a swarm of greenhead flies. I still have the welts so I wouldn't want to land there even if I had to. That's Greeney's territory.

The zone that is cool is the plume of sand to the West between North and South Monomoy. AKA Western Flats. That is Bob Wright's home turf. He knows that place better than anyone. He is a really cool dude, smile and give him a wave and offer him a cold beer.
We got greeneys, whiteys.. whatever you're looking for!
The no fly zone as far as Threatened or Endangered Bird species is concerned is 200 yards from their nests. So, doesn't matter if you are on land or on the water, the kite must be 200 yards from the nest. PK's correct; if you think boats and people are hard to comply with, the Endangered Species Act is tougher and can get us into deep doo doo quicker.
