The Rozalia Project
Hi guys,
Rachael from Stormboarding has a totally different job in the summer! She has created the The Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean, which basically uses advanced technologies to find and remove harmful ocean debris. She is traveling the east coast this summer, and will be stopping in Boston. She mentioned that they will definitely be stopping and working in the Charles, but would like to know some other places that they could possibly focus on. Immediately, Dog Beach came to my mind. But what other beaches have you seen possibly dangerous debris or trash in the waters? Are there any areas on the Cape that are in need of a cleanup? Please post your observations and ideas in this thread.

And I already sent a lot of you today a facebook invite to join, but here is the facebook address so you can get more up-to-date information:

Seeing debris and trash in the ocean really bothers me. It can be as dangerous to us as much as it is to wildlife. Let's see if our group can really help make a difference and be an asset to this project. Thanks!
I think this is a fantastic project. I am astounded with how cavalier the commercial fishing industry appears to be about jetisoning their gear. the fishing gear today is made of metal and plastic, very slow to decompose. In the old days, wood and hemp were used, so when the trap broke loose from its mooring, it would quickly turn to dust.
I applaud Rachel for doing something about this!
The Charles River has been a dumping ground and although we don't kite there, she could spend years removing centuries of debris from its depths. MA State Police has jurisdiction over these waters, so she should contact them for authorization and scheduling. Diving activities may be restricted/prohibited just prior to and through the 4th of July.
Dog Beach (lobster traps, commercial fishing debris)
PBay (Plastic Bags, PVC pipes)
Revere / Nahant
Boston Harbor (a conversation with the Harbor Master and could pinpoint areas of concern) MA State Police has some jurisdiction over these waters, so she should contact them for authorization and scheduling. Diving activities may be restricted/prohibited just prior to and through the 4th of July as well as during LNG and other tanker activity.
This is tight!
Rachel is awesome for doing this.
How clean is Ninigret Pond?
I've never been, but it seems like an area that might collect debris and not have a mechanism for removing it.
And after living in Medford for 4 years, its pretty clear that the Mystic river is one of the most polluted in the area.
The entire Tufts crew team once came down with a bacterial infection after one practice in that water. My college roommate and all his friends couldn't row for like 2 weeks and had to go on meds, gross.

I know the area around Squantum is full of debris.
