I'm looking to do a daytrip up North and do some snowkiting soon. Does anyone have any suggestions on locations to keep an eye on and optimal wind direction? I live in Connecticut, but close to the Mass Pike, so Vermont and New Hampshire are definitely places to consider.
Thanks
chris

Hey Chris the conditions here

Hey Chris the conditions here are not good bear lumpy rutted up ice and not enough snow in the fields. The day we were out and all that slush, well all that froze just like it was and we have gotten no snow:( Zeb in North Conway says things are still good up there. Thinking of exploring a lake in VT called Harriman reservoir west of Wilmington and south of Rt9, driven by many times and there is plenty of room, and all the twists and turns look like it would quite the challenge:) If I get up there I will post conditions.

Massabessic in Southern NH is

Massabessic in Southern NH is pretty good, Harriman is big and one section is downwind of wind turbines so it is windy, but it is surrounded by hills so quite gusty, Somerset Reservoir in Southern VT is better but still gusty. Best bet is the bigger lakes like Winnipesaukee. Rangeley Lake and Mooselookmeguntic Lake in ME can also be very good. Always wanted to go to Moosehead but its a pretty long drive.

Live near Massabesic

I am glad to hear Massabesic is good. This will be my first year snowkiting, (I am still waiting for my training kite to arrive). I live about 10 minutes from Massabesic. I would be interested to know if you can recommend where the best place is to park in the winter there for snowkiting. Also do you know good places to park at the big lakes in the winter for snowkiting. (Winnipesaukee, Sunapee, etc.). Thanks.

I have gone boating on

I have gone boating on Harriman reservior, im not sure how it would be because it is narrow with long stretches. Somerset looks good with a nice big section to the north. I always see it from Mount Snow, but I dont see any roads on google maps to the northern section. Spofford Lake looks good, its 739 acre right at the boarder of NH in Chesterfield. I have never been there to snowkite but it may be worth it to check it out. we really need a good +12" storm, everything is bare and I dont like it.

Take the Stratton Arlington Road to Grout Pond Road. There's a winter parking area at the junction. You have to go down Grout Pond road and follow the snowmobile trail out onto the lake, about 2 miles, so it helps to have a sled, but if you have climbing skins or some kick wax its a pretty quick trip on skis too. Or bring a 6-pack and a tow rope and get some sledhead to tow you down there.

Lake Champlain

Just an FYI on Lake Champlain....solid glare ice both sides of Sandbar. Went out Sunday on shaped skis and a 3 meter Samurai. Winds were 22+. Ws able to fight and get way upwind and it actually wasn't the worst day I've had kiting. The 3 meter kept things in control, but pleanty of speed. Another guy had a 4.5 meter Flysurfer Extacy and he was well powered. Rachael was doing lessons on a carpet with a 2.5 meter Pepper. There was an ice boat regatta on the north side and probably 20 boats. Tons of people skating too. NO chance of riding a snowboard and old school straight skis would serve you best. Last option, a small kite and ice skates and you're in business!
