Tug Hill, NY - Snowkite Ozone Basecamp Fly In Jan31- Feb1st
Lots of fun last year and it's unique to kite under the huge wind turbines - PM me for carpool and hotel arrangements if we go as a group?
This year Tug Hill Ozone Basecamp fly in is Jaunuary 31st - Febuary 1st. We will have the base camp this year at the Deer Farm Location . The Deer Farm site has lots of terrain for more experianced kiters. We also have the Honeyville site which is faces the prevailing wind out of the South West with winds comming right off of Lake Ontario up on to the Tug Hill. The winds there have been very stable so far when we have rode there this year. We will also have the same sites we had last year to ride like Steve Hannos and the Snow Pals site. For more Information and times and maps you can go to Bob Dehil's. site.
This site will be updated as time goes on. Jan
I just blocked this on my calendar and hope to make it. Thank you for posting up the link ect as it reminded me just how soon it is.. Calendars have a way of putting these things into perspective
I'll be there, if it's windy.
Meeting some friends there so probably carpool / book hotels on our own. Let us know where you're going to book a hotel and we'll try to use the same place.
Same for ll of you other people if you think you can go then lets settle on a place so that in the end what does happen is we are all parting together! Vs last minute separation. Most rooms have a 24hr cancel
A friend of mine expressed his excitement as the Tug Hill area is getting about 6 inches an hour as we speak!
I am certainly going to be there and will be riding there for Ozone and IMCS...I will have a huge tent and flags and Brian is coming from Utah etc...Kelly from ME....all should go!!
It is going to be great!
I m more psyched about tug hill than vt...even more ppsyched about US open then the latter...but mostly psyched about getting a bad ass day out today in nice steady winds from the west,....which really means gusty!
big air. Fast Taxi's et al...SNOW for SUNDAY up here....more wind on the way...folks come on up!!
it is going to be great!

I will most likely not be attending : (
Anyone book a room yet? I'd like to book a room where everyone else is going to be....
Sump I am standing in your shoes. MY cousin has a 21st B-day party on Sat. I am supposed to attend but could still go. Gorette is in NJ for one more weekend class for maintaining her attorney license. But I have no idea where to stay nor do I want to drive up alone. So its possibly myself, you(Sump), and Christian. How long is the drive? I need to make my decision as to what I should do. Can we assume no one else is coming.. Can people chime in an say no I can't go. Be nice to have a few more heads.
I'm 60/40 can/can't.
Unfortunately, I won't know until sometime in Feb. It's either that or go somewhere warm :)
Right now it looks like I'll have 2 friends driving with me, plus a dog, plus meeting a friend there... so mostly likely we'll be driving ourselves and staying at our own place. That's what I wanted to coordinate lodging so we can at least hang out together!
There has got to be some other people planning on going from this area?! This is the best snowkite event in our area!
Jermy you will know in Feb??? this is Jan31 and feb 1??!!
I will need a group to travel with if I commit. Are wind there good on avg.. Seeing how they installed those wind turbines..
whoa, really? I thought it was the last week in Feb. Thats a little different. I'll look into it today when I go to work.
OK, got cleared from work!! I'm in!!
(turns out its a better weekend to take off than the one I originally thought)
Sump, where are you staying? I'll book a room close.

Nice! Haven't looked yet but I need a place that accepts 24hour cancellations (I ain't going all the way there without wind) and is pet friendly.
You guys bringing yer ladyfriends?
btw, there is no official website for this event, right?
edit: I did find this site:
http://www.lewiscountyrecreation.com/kiteskiing.shtml
they have some event forms on there... may be worth printing those out before-hand.
So for anyone else trying to find out where the hell this thing is... it appears to be at:
rt 177 & mile square, lowville, ny

Sounds fun! Sorry to miss it, but I have deadline staring at me between the eyes
I have my big F-150 quad cab. We can take that split gas ect ect. Jermy I will ride with you if yah like and we can split a room or I would prefer not top pay for my own. Blue lets do this car pooling or whatever. Jermy can you spot the hotel as Sump said pet friendly and 24hr cancel. Maybe you can call Windzup in Utah and see if they have more info as an Ozone affiliate.
I am going to pull the trigger on the T-shirts today so we should have them. I hope that they can print some flags too. I got pricing so be nice to have them before the event. The flag is a great way to find our base camp! Is a tent a good idea?? I have that heater that runs on small 1lb tanks or the full size grill tank.
LOL I had to do the same thing earlier. I have a google maps file I can make into an article if that helps. Take Sump's map and select "search nearby" to get some places to stay. Looks like most are in Lowville with a few exceptions.
I just found out I'm missing a major engagement I had previously planned for that weekend. F. I'm pretty torn :/

May I suggest we combine our $$ and get a weekend house rental? cancellation/pet being the only issues it seems we have enough and could grill to save some extra $$ - could be fun - thoughts?
I'd be down for that. Don't worry about the 24hour cancellation since most of them don't seem to allow for that - I could chip in even if I don't go / make the weekend out of it with or without wind. I'd really like to be able to bring a dog, but if not I'm sure I could work something out. My party should have 3-4 including myself! Let us know what you find!
I put the info on the front page... JD, How do you make it do the "read more..." thing?
EDIT: nevermind, found it.
And I have no Idea why it always zooms all the way in... but the google map is there, just zoom out to see stuff.
I E-mailed a few people about pets:
Elliott,
We have availability on Friday & Sat nights, Jan 31st - Feb 1st. However, I'm not sure that we are what you are looking for. Our property is a 7 bedroom restored farmhouse- a rental would be for the entire house. Our basic rate is $300/night plus 5% occupancy tax for up to 8 people. We would charge an extra $20/night for each dog, and also require a refundable $100 security deposit. We are on Tug Hill- 1/2 way between Barnes Corners and Copenhagen, about 20 minutes from Lowville. I'm not sure where the snowkite festival will be.

I just Gmaped it, looks to be about 10miles from the launch site!
$300 a night - that's a pretty good deal. Who's in? 7 rooms... I'm sure we can stuff more than 8 people in there if needed (shhhh)
I need a few more to commit because I don't want to get stuck with the bill if there is no wind. I know it would suck if there is no wind, but that's unlikely - this place has the most reliable wind around (hence why they put up 195 wind turbines there).
Anyways, if I don't get 6 people to commit (we have 3 right now with a lot of maybes) in a few days I'm just going to book my own hotel room.
I really hope we can do the house though - it would be a lot of fun!
Sweet, got 6 confirmed. I'll book it once normal people wake up.
I have to bail :(
Sump Trev is in too he said he would call you.
Booked - let's pray for wind!
If there's still room, you can count me in !!!
If there's still room, you can count me in !!!
You're in!
Looks pretty perfect. Some new snow this week with nice smooth winds for the weekend!
I am so excited about this. Everytime I get excited about a trip I think allot has to do with the company!! I am so excited to go hang with people that have as much fun as I expect to have. I cant wait to chill at the house and see what memories present themselves!! This should be great and its not that far away now!
I'm stoked too... we still got some room in the house if anyone else wants in. I counted 13 beds - I think we have like 8 or 9 filled so far...
Bummed I can't go, plus I would have loved to shoot a few deer and go riding my snow machine....
PeteCat might be in! He just wanted me to give him the details and he did not want to miss the Superbowl though.
Is Matt going he has the flag!!! I have a work dinner tonight and then I am having to pack tonight.. I hate that part as all my gear is in my truck as I left it from Sat.
I am super excited!! Love finishing a session and then just PAHtay!! No rush.. no ones leaving!

report??
Snow sucked, no wind, the house blew up...
J/k - it rocked... I'm going to wait for the pictures before I write up anything...
Ok I will start. We drove through crazy snow storms and arrived at 2AM to the house. It was buried! snow up to the windows. The doors to the truck when opened was like leveling a measuring spoon. I mean it was so deep! We had to check the car in the driveway to make sure it had MASS tags. When we woke up we were surrounded by snow covered fields. 5-6 ft of snow I guess from past storms. I have never seen so much snow! We had breakfast thanks to Sump. We headed to the event. They had a big geodome base camp tent with heat so that was awesome. We set up and the wind was stop and go. But the terrain had rolling hills and one good peak to loop your kite up!
When you stopped you could be up to your knees and in some drifts waist in snow! It was hard though moving around without power was a struggle. It was crazy though surfing poweder like that, and jumping off theses peaks or riding down them. Everyone was having a blast! That night we had a big Cheese fondue event and spaghetti! The next morning we hit the event again and it was warmer. I rode for 3 hours and selfishly took almost no pics... I am so Sorry!! I have never had such a 3 dimensional snow experience. Pete got his first ride although he is lucky that it was not any worse as he went into the road.
He had ridden at NH and I spent the day with him there working on set up, relaunching, and self rescue. Then he flew again on the first day and then second day flew the 3m for an hour. Most people once they ride get scared and stop or fall a few times once they get going. Pete unfortunately proved to me that his expert level of skiing gave him NO FEAR. He ran the entire length of the field 3 times at about 20mph-25mph. He said after "everything was working and I was flying, I didnt want to stop." Only problem was he was doing to well riding his first time that he never dealt with going up wind. So he ran out of field and did realize that he needed to stop. He knew how just didn't want too.. Instead he though he would attempt another high speed turn.
I feel bad and he was not even shook-up but I have never seen anyone get going like that not by accident but because he wanted to.. He was saying wooohoo right into the street. Most people go fast and bail.. or fall a few times to catch there breath not Pete..
So I tried to make light of it as it was really a bad thing. But then to listen to Pete it was like he never felt like he didnt know what to do. He just thought he could push it.. He survived and I am officially apologizing.. I suck as a teach but Pete sucks as a student who figgin goes like a bat out of hell on purpose he was not out of control at all just CRAZY!
That was the best snow kiting I have ever done! That was a great experience! Doing a front roll off the peak of a hill is so diff then flat water!!!
Had a blast cant wait to see the pictures!

Here is the article from the area paper
How many people were there?

I went last year and it's always got good wind and snow - I'll try to find where I stayed - anyone have room in their vehicle or need a ride?
