so i just had my first sesh in a wake park. awesome.

2 questions (insert chooch comments here):

What are good bindings to get to start getting into wake style riding?

And the board/bindings I rented today seemed to have a really slippery substance added to the inside of the bindings... what is that? it seemed to work really well for getting out of yer bindings fast. Is that something that pro's use? Or is that a danger or hindrance when kiting with wake style bindings? help...

Its called binding lube. You

Its called binding lube. You dont need it its stupid just dip the board in the water and put the boots on, thats the way they were designed. And slingshot boots are probly your best bet. Closed toe, snowboard style, on the fly stance adjustment, and heat mold able liners. Another thing is the board, a handful of pro riders sponsored by slingshot dont even actually use the "kite wakeboard" (the darkside), instead a popular board for kiting is a wake specific board called the reflex. If you look it up and then watch the core kite jam video closely, youll see people using it. Lastly, a good flat water location (obviously). And yeah wakeparks are sick, I went to one of the first ones in Deerfield beach (ft lauderdale) there was a twelve year old kid there who could make everyone on this forum look like a total newbie.

Best bindings hands down are

Best bindings hands down are the Ronix boots. Ridden just about everything else (SS D2's, SS PB, LF synergies, LF Shanes, LF Watsons, LF Union, LF Escalade). Slingshot boots were a bit to bulky for me and I didn't like the 2 piece liner. LF boots are a whole different story...they just fall apart and a not a comfertable as Slingy and Ronix boots. I have a pair of Ronix Ones (Meduim Stifness when broken in) and Ronix Cells (Stiffest Boot I have ridden).

The softer boots are nice for rails and kickers since you can tweak shit out a bit easier, stiffer boots are better for flatwater tricks since they give you better edge controll. I recomend starting with something soft to medium stifness, they are all going to be stiffer than straps Wink

As for boards there are plenty out there that work great. Here is a list of a few of em

SS Reflex (wakeboard)
SS Darkside (2010 looks good, 2009 was shit)
LF Watson Hybrid (wakeboard)
LF DLX
LF Influence
Cabrinha Custom
Wainman Joke

Get something 138cm-143cm with 2+ inches of rocker. Bigger board= more edge= more pop and softer landings due to the added surface area.

The reflex is a good board (i have an 09) but it needs a shit ton of wind to get going. If guys are riding on 12m kites with regular twin tips I need to be on a 14m with the reflex. It has a bit to much rocker for someone just getting into wakestyle and is really only a good slider board....its really hard to pop good with all that rocker unless your a pro and been riding wakestyle for years IMHO. Stick with a kite specific wakestyle board for now...then you can check out different stuff once you get the boots and board dialed.

No need for the slime...older bindings were a lot harder to get into. All the modern boots are really fast entry and exit.

PS
Sorry to shoot down your slingy pimp but thats what you get for giving biased info.

Brian, look at you keepin up

Brian, look at you keepin up with the east cost crew. Wink

So how about this? Since you seem to be up on your gear these days. Tongue What's a good pad / straps option for those of us that don't want to go full boots but basically do wakestyle? My shits all old and busted and need to get something new but haven't been looking around at gear in a while. Just want something comfy for the bum heal and adjustable while keepin the foot locked in pretty solid. Not opposed to heal straps either.

Also do you have any thoughts on the Youri Pro boards? I've been diggin the style and construction for a few years now and thinking of trying to find one to replace the old crossfire (yes I'm still riding that thing...)

Peace,
Kyle

Not sure about straps but I

Not sure about straps but I am in love with the mystic D30 pads. Expensive up front but will save ankles/knees/body for later. Really are cushy and then firm up and dampen on hard landings.

Never ridden the board. But

Never ridden the board. But with its outline it might be shit in choppy water (super flat and stiff for good pop). Solid board from what I have heard though. Look into something with a bit more rocker/concave to give you a smoother ride in the chop and softer landings.

As for straps I couldn't tell you.....been riding Boots for the last 3 years.

Hey I'm still on the east

Hey I'm still on the east coast! Wink I'll be back on the Cape next week.

I see you're riding strapless on your skim, just keep doing that!
Most new strap/pad setups are pretty nice these days. Cab and Litewave offer similar hybrid bindings like the Sync. They are sort of like backless bindings. These might be your best bet if you don't want to go full on with boots.

For traditional pads for sure check out the Mystic D30 pads, probably perfect for a bum heal!

I like the Underground setup alot, the new Slingshot Bolt-Ons2 feels nice. CrazyFly has a cool setup with a big toe ridge, some like it some don't.

Pad/strap setups are like shoes so it's really hard to say what's going to work well for you. Get your feet into as many as you can before making a decision. You are welcome to try any gear I have with me on the Cape this summer if you want.
Hope this helps!

Did you used to ride the Blunt? What do you think of the 130 or 135 with wake boots? I'm not really looking onto getting another board, although the joke does look sweeet. Whats the rocker like on that thang?

Rode the 135 with boots. It

Rode the 135 with boots. It is too flat and small for boots. You really need something a little bit bigger with more rocker to work well. I think the original blunt had 1.6" of rocker.

Really stoked on the Joke, rode the 138. Getting the 142 since I like big boards. It has 2.3" of rocker which is great for a boot board. Also has bottom channels at the tips for finless riding.

One more quick question on

One more quick question on the boots... Do you get them to fit perfectly? Or do you get them a little big/then tighten them down?

That all depends on the

That all depends on the brand. Slingshot and Ronix are the same as your normal shoe size, LF boots go a size big (they run really small).

Yeah, I was afraid of that.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I bought some LF bindings last year that were my size and ended up not even being able to fit my feet in them. at least 2 sizes off.

CWB bindings

Hey man,

This will probably sound pretty biased, but I highly recommend CWB bindings. They have multiple models with this hinge system that is similar to that found in Flow snowboard bindings. Once you snap back the lever in the back, the entire back of the binding rotates away from your foot. Super easy to get on and off (just takes one extra step compared to bindings without this hinge). I've been able to kick off my board because of this system in seconds during a couple of "oh shit" situations with no problems.

The only downside is these bindings come with the new standard 6" hole pattern which does not fit most kiteboards. I think only certain wake-specific kiteboards have the extra holes to accommodate that.

Their bindings only come in three sizes, but the bindings are made really well and will accommodate the size foot the size chart says.

I have a pair of torques, but if you check the website they have many models with that hinge. They're also great about replacement parts (carry every part you'll ever need in stock and you can order directly from their website).

I would stay away from the

I would stay away from the CWB torques. They are way to heavy and they fall apart. You have to keep in mind that all wakeboard boots are made for fresh water. The salt water we kite in will destroy all the parts in that boot.

Takes me less than 2 min to get into my boots. Don't see why it needs to be sped up any more.

On a side note: most all kiteboards and wakeboards have moved to a standard 6" insert spacing for 2010. Makes life a lot easier for buying boots for a kiteboard.

PS the Torques were my first pair of boots behind a kite....the liner ripped in 4 sessions.

Slipper substance used for wake binding boots

Jermy, It was most likely dish washing detergent lined in the boot. Most wake boarders used that back in the early days of kiting.
