WE THE PLOVERS AND GOLDENROD FOUNDATION OF PLYMOUTH
Last night on Channel4, WBZTV aired an investigative report on an organization trying to restrict all access to a stretch of beach in Plymouth using the Piping Plover argument as the reason. The organization is known as the Goldenrod Foundation, a private foundation that along with a handful of citizens has filed numerous legal challenges to the town of Plymouth's use of the beach. Goldenrod Foundation owns a tax exempt beach front cottage that is allegedly used by birdwatchers and scientists according to the investigation. Turns out that the Goldenrod Foundation is comprised of only three people, Scott Hecker, excutive director of the foundation, co-founder and San Francisco millionaire Cate Muther and her husband and Dennis Aftergut. Cate Muther and her husband own a personal home just a few feet away from the Goldenrod Cottage and are the sole contributors to the Goldenrod Foundation in 2008 and in 2009 Muther created another foundation of which she donated $775,000 to and more than half was used on lawyers to push for more restrictions on the beach.
The town of Plymouth is going head to head with the Goldenrod Foundation in order to protect access for cars but the Goldenrod Foundation is outspending the town. According to the town manager he beleive's the foundation will be SUCCESSFUL IN RESTRICT ACCESS TO THE BEACH!
While this is currently being fought in the court system "if the Goldenrod Foundation is successful it could be precedent-setting. THAT MEANS BEACHES ACROSS THE STATE COULD FACE MORE RESTRICTIONS". "WE THE PLOVERS" WINS! IN THIS CASE A SUCCESSFUL LANDGRAB BY A HANDFUL PRIVATE FOUNDATION.
Man, I knew something fishy was going on with this plovers issue.
I mean, how are so many freaking beaches shut down for a single species of NON-ENDANGERED birds?
I've seen beaches shut down/had restricted access in Hatteras, Cape Cod, Boston, and North of Boston.... and I'm just one person.
Do we need to organize a march on Washington?

Well I do kite at Plymouth beach and I've had personal run ins with this Muther lady. She tried to force me to land my kite claiming I would scare the birds from their nests. I told her that I launched and landed in the water (ankle deep) and that she really can't say shit because I wasn't on the beach. Thankfully I know most of the beach staff and they all agree that this lady is out of control. There have been petitions passed down the beach on busy days to try and stop this lady but apparently they didn't have any affect. I would love to put together some sort of video showing things from our side. We do have more firsthand experience than most of these researchers and scientists. I'm not sure where I'm going with this but the subject just gets me fired up. I remember Plymouth beach when the whole town could be out there hanging out, now you have to wait in line just to get a chance to be allowed out. And the barrier lines have been pushed so close to the water that high tide essentially closes the point because the water comes right up into the barriers. Looks like I might have to buy a boat

Travis' kite water taxi. Subverting the local plover nazis since 2010.
Hey guys this was in today's Old Colony Memorial here in Plymouth. It's an awesome article on the front page of the paper basically punching holes in the plover argument. I love it. http://www.wickedlocal.com/plymouth/news/enviroment/x742789831/-Manufact...
Trav, that's the BEST article I've seen yet.
Knowing the stats on how they base the population health, and then comparing it to the actual numbers... it's so much more clear now. What a waste of $$ for the town of Plymouth to have to go through with this battle!
Thanks for posting... it was a really good read and everyone should check it out.
Wow, Good research. I'm actually all for closing parts of beaches for a few months when the birds are nesting. I mean as much as everyone bitch's.... In reality we do have enough places to ride around here, when some are closed. As responsible kiter’s we can do our part to respect legitimate beach closures.
However this is a clear boondoggle where they just want to have beach restrictions next to their house. i.e. "Now that I have my nice place on the water... you can't come near me..."
Good work.
Jeff
Yes, this is good example of how much influence you can have community-wide if you have deep pockets. Our politics have been corrupted by the almighty dollar. It is time to take this country back!
the unfortunate truth is that goldenrod has more money than plymouth to counter all these suits. Its really sad that its going that way. I'm an orv user on sandy neck and it would be hard to handle if this same issue was going down there. Its hard enough to deal w/ the limited beach closure during summer.
Watch the video, you can tell the goldenrod dude is lying because his mouth is moving!
Ha ha stupid goldenrod lawyer. What a douche.
If they care so much they will demolish their two houses and create a plover safe zones in the old foundations.

I saw the documentary for the Cape Hatteras. It puts a face to the other side which is what thankfully the I-Team at WBZ4 already did. Not that I kite in Plymout but it opens the presidence to exploit the laws for personal interest. How about doing one here in Cape Cod and Massachusetts? Serously
