I know its the winter doldrums, but the unseasonably warm weather has got me thinking about 2012.

What's new or you this year? We know how new gear makes you better, so how are you stepping up our game?

As for me:

2012 Epic Screamer LTD 10m
2011 Xenon Laluz 132
And a baby.

Too chicken, another goal for 2012 is to avoid injury. Last week I kited two beautiful sessions, not just because the wind was solid and I was alongside my good friends, but also because for the first time in 6 months it was pain free.

Injury

I was talking to Sam about this the other day, but I think the days of throwing loops (at least lots of them) is coming to an end for me. Too much risk for major knee/ankle problems -> getting old.

I think looping the kite is a great technique for generating a lot of power quickly in certain situations, put doing them Lenten style is too risky.

For me, at least, it's risky. I feel like if I pull early, I don't have great control of it being a 10ft high loop (which I am ok with) and a bigger one that results in coming down hard because I lack the skill to control the landing Len10 style. A few times last season I hit hard enough to bang my knuckles off the board.

Also, no more loops in bad chop for me.

Ethibond Excel

I have some new Ethibond Excel suture material in my right knee. The sport will be all new to me when I am able to ride again. I will be taking nothing for granted and looking forward to executing my first water start some time at the beginning of the summer. When I left off I was getting decent air while jumping, doing loop transitions and working on back rolls and back roll transitions.

2010 6M RPM bought new in the late fall. I have used it more than my 14M since I bought it. I liked it so much that just bought a 2011 8M RPM. Sold my previous 8M Havoc and I am selling my 2010 5'4" Naish Fish to be replaced by ???

I need to learn to tack and my surfboard and work on strapless airs(someday).

no straps

Start riding waves without the straps. Don't even put the straps on the board. It is more natural surfing and a completely different challenge from the twin tip.

well, losing the board and doing a long swim when the water temperature is 47 degrees is pretty hard core.

Make sure you give it time to heal.

Sam;

Backing off and letting the new cartilage heal is key for the microfracture procedure to work properly. I know its hard because it probably feels fine already. You need to give the new cartilage time to harden and remodel other wise it will just disintegrate when you start leaning on it again.
I had it done about 10 years ago and aside from the 8 months that I had to back off while it heals it has been awesome. My other knee is shit right now but the micro-fracture repaired knee has been awesome.

Renegade 7, Cameron's green kite, I can vouch for its performance! Had one of the best sessions of 2011 on that thing.

2012s

Demo'd the older Boss and loved it. Was just never a fan of the bar & safey (lack there of). The new bar setup is sweet. I picked up the 2012s barely used from a guy that was looking to change out his quiver to a 14.5 and 10.5.

Especially when you don't hot launch it with the lines rigged backwards!
