Deluxbury Delight
Busy weekend pulling off chores, kids soccer and lacrosse games, cocktail parties... finally, Sunday afternoon, it's about one thing: kiting! Damien calls for a ride - I always enjoy taking the environmentally friendly kiters sans cars to the beach - and he asks if I want him to bring me a sandwich... I remembered that this Frenchman makes his own bread, and I say YES! iKitesurf is on the money, and the Northeast wind builds steadily until 4 PM, when I find myself on a 7 meter, doing the conveyor belt with Johnny Hujol, Skyrocket, and Adam LeFevre. We go way out to sea, pinch up wind, then twist and turn in the surf while going down wind, signing the kite, toeside turning, launching big air going out, the swell steadily increases, the faces get cleaner, my legs are burning, I ride until I have no more energy left, 3 hours on the hook, ends with a spectacular sunset. As we savor our Smutty Nose IPA's, we notice that Tenacious D, who had been riding in the pond, has crashed his kite and is slowly drifting across the lagoon in the fast approaching darkness. A dude claiming to be with the Coast Guard is ready to do a rescue, we try to calm the anxiety and explain he does this sort of thing all of the time. The Assistant Harbor Master meets him on the other side and gives him a ride back to his car. Thanks Duxbury and believe us when we say that Dan learned his lesson, never again!
When we arrived in the morning, the ocean side didn't look interesting, just some small chaos chop. So we decided to ride in the pond on the northern side of the bridge. But the wind didn't pickup before 11am or so. After that I was really lit on my 11m at times...
I showed up at 3ish with the notion that I was going to go out for my third day ever...I live in Dux and have grown up windsurfing so the transition to kiting has been long overdue. I peak at the ocean peak at the bay and decide I have more balls than brains and head out front. I set up the 12m Naish torch and out I go for my third time on the board I 140cm that I am demoing. I head out in the shore break and wow so much easier than windsurfing out I go first try. out I head current is pushing me down wind but I have faith I can get back up wind. the swell is HUGE off shore and I am having fun up and over up and over...stop drop change direction and in I head after a dozen or so tacks I start to realize that I am down wind further than I would like and make it a point to get back to my launch point...here in lies the problem and ultimately my question. HOW THE HELL do you manage the waves coming back in? I would get picked up slide out and crash, head out and do it again. I had a blast trying to figure this out but ultimately was unsuccesfull. I crashed a few times lost the board a few times and the final crash lost board and helmet causing me to lose so much ground that I ended the day about 500 yards down wind (with all my gear) I had a Great time about 2.5 hours of fun. I just need some pointers for getting back to the beach in nasty shore break. I can only imaging how much fun it is going to be as I watched you all on surfboards (not twin tip) rip it up. I grew up with Adam in town windsurfing and now he dumped all that gear to kite all the time so it must be fun.
any feed back would be great.
Hey this sounds like a great 3rd ride! Really 3rd time!! You of course got dragged down wind. It takes awhile to gain that upwind ability. Bu the fact you enjoyed trying and trying again! Sweet I will keep an eye out for progress report.
deluxbury round 2...
or maybe should be called mosquitoes on acid
launched at the bridge and sailed upwind downwind upwind downwind upwind downwind.. till my legs felt like they were going to fall off..almost like course racing but 10000 times more fun.
like to mix it and ride different spots..and looked like a high probability of just having seals and sharks for company out east that day..they are both ~1 hr from my house
Hey Jean,
I am glad you liked the Sandwich and the pictures look nice.
I played on some of them with phothoshop to make it brigther as when I started shooting those at the end of my session, it was already pretty dark.
You did a good job putting them together and wrote a nice session report!
We will do that again.
Was nice riding those big waves with you, Greg and Adam. Learning from watching you guys.
Too bad Johnny Hujol left soon after we arrived.
Cheers,
Damien

You just surf the waves, find the smooth water, avoid the washing machine, head down wind when you need to get out of the way of something, keep a good amount of weight on the back foot. In the surf, we'll typically lose ground, and then go out past the break to get back up wind, what I was calling the conveyor belt. Going upwind is something you will improve upon over time, with or without waves.
