Wow what a weekend!
Three solid days of riding in beautiful conditons.
I woke up Friday morning with a serious itch to scratch. You all know the feelings of anxiety, eagerness and overall excitement that preceeds a big weather system.
By 10 AM I was pumping up at Long Point with Kevin and we were both debating on whether an 8m was going to be too much kite. I guinea pigged and after gettingg use to the gustiness I came in to help Kev launch his 9m.
Within minutes we were both charging upwind int he short chop that accompanies riding in Tisbury Great Pond. But the best was yet to be seen. After a 5min charge upwind we were at my all time favorite playground.
Twice a year a cut is dug between the pond and the ocean. Well last week they dug a 10 meter wide cut that allows the pond to release all of the built up contaminents that the summer growth in population produces. So on Friday with a West wind blowing 35-45mph the sand bar just on the outside of the cut was breaking in perfect chest high barrells that end up breaking into eachother in a V. SO you would come ripping out through the cut on starboard flip over to toeside and carve a top turn off the lip then ride the break back into the pond. So goddamn much fun.
Of course the weekend was just getting started. On Saturday I met up with a few of the boys to drive out to Cape Pogue. We decided taking the boat would be too rough and we were right. We arrived on the North West elbow of Pogue to 30-35 mph and 2 miles of glass extending the south west. It was amazing ripping in perfect glass for that long. I threw on the GPS for a few runs and found to my amazement that we were all doing a regular 28 kts just cruising. The only downfall was that it was relatively low tide so jumping was sketchy as you were usually landing in 2 ft or less of water. No big deal as long as things went according to plan. In my case it didn't always go to plan. Especially when I decide its time to do some unhooked moves. My first raley was nice not very big but good enough to give me the confidence to push it harder. So I get some speed unload, unhook and throw it. The only problem was I threw it too hard and put too much pressure on my backhand this would have been ok but combine it with the gust that hit me and.....oh shit......I am higher than the kite.....oh shit throw the board........ooh shit hold on, no let go...fuck.......YARD SALE!!!
Today was a little different. For one thing it's not averaging 30 or higher and the breeze is further left which warmed things up. The boys were meeting up at noon on the dock to take Zadeh's boat out but with my time being limited I opted to launch at Fuller street and kite downwind to Pogue. They came cruising out in the boat as I was half way to the cut. Once out in Pogue I realized the breeze really wasn't that strong which was great because it allowed me to work on the unhooked moves that alluded me yesterday and I even hit an unhooked board grab for the first time. Once everyone was out and rigged I decided it was time to roll home so I kited back upwind to Fuller St and was able to make land 10ft. from where I launched.
All in all it was an amazing weekend. Hopefully everyone had as much fun.
Big Thanks to Rich, Kevin and especially Zadeh for covering everyones transportation.
