You guys familiar with any Mac tools for video editing that would include rotating video/straightening horizon? Thanks in advance!

Final Cut Pro. Avid Media

Final Cut Pro. Avid Media Composer, most of them do it - except for the iMovie type freeware that comes with your machine.

Jean Have you ever used AVIDs

Jean

Have you ever used AVIDs consumer oriented packages. I see they in addition to the ~$2k they also have an elements competitor package at ~ $150. http://www.avid.com/us/products/avid-studio
Wonder if it works better than sony/adobe

I don't know. Have never

I don't know. Have never used it. My advice would be to buy Avid's Media Composer at the educational discount. It's $295 last I checked. I assume you have the credentials since you work at WHOI. Then I can lend you a great book which teaches it. It's a great interface, takes a little getting used to but then you will be a much happier editor.

Peter or Jean, How do you

Peter or Jean,
How do you maintain image orientation from the kite cam?
Is it through post editing or some gimbal mounting of the cam on the kite lines?

The lens on the contour cams

The lens on the contour cams does rotate so you can set it for a landscape or portrait mode beforehand, but everytime the rider turns the you need kite you need to correct in post processing... or watch it on a tablet or phone and just rotate by hand. That actually works really well!

For Jean and Tim that correction was not too bad as they held there kites fairly still except for transtions, but for some of the cam mounts I have put on my own kites the correction was painful due to the hummingbird on acid who flies my kite when I ride waves downwind:

Thanks!

What is a "contour cam"?

Very impressive video and set of wave riding skills!  Looked like an amazing day at HN.  I think that was around the time I decided to try the sport and signed up for my first trainer kite lesson :) Smile " width="19" />

This past Saturday, I shot my first kite POV video. I did the rotation in post, but I used Windows Movie Maker, which does not allow 'at will' rotation (only pre-set angles, like 180 or 360 degrees). You can see it at:

Very lame, I'll admit, after watching you play in the waves.  But there's a start to everything.  I hope I'll be one day half as good as you are.

Well, I searched for songs of the french revolution..and of course found La Marseillaise on first hit, and remembered it was good.

I alternate between Sony Vegas or Premier Elements. I don't really like either that much. I like the interface of premeier a bit better but it takes longer to remember how to use if not using it for a while, as with all adobe products (non-intuitive, but powerful) they both run well on high power work pc workstation, but vegas is seems to handle he raw avchd much better on my less powerful laptop at home.

What should I use? A priority would be smoother editing of avchd from my panasonic gh2 on a laptop. it's a newish one with 4Gb ram, i5, so super not powerful, but ok. I don't need a ton of features and don't use that much, except rotations and clipping etc.

It looks like you have the tools for the job and you know how to use them. My personal preference is for Avid Media Composer, but that it because it has been the tool of professionals for 20 years and handles very complex work. The software is expensive so I don't recommend it for casual users.
