With big waves and a strong NE wind in the forecast, Friday was looking like an epic day.

Jermy and I drove up to Yirell Beach and were shocked at how different it looked. The tide was about half out and the inside was fairly flat. Outside, huge waves were breaking across the entire cove entrance, with the point looking like a washing machine.

Just as I was starting to pump, Jermy got a call from Jean that Nantasket was a bust due to the storm surge tide. Everyone was headed for Nahant, and Jean sold us that it looked epic, so we jumped back in the car, driving by a picture perfect 5-sisters, breaking head high waves clean down the line.

Nahant looking like a two-mile long washing machine. Big waves breaking all over, making the entire inside a whitewater mess. The wind was fairly light, and a 12m could barely keep me up. After about an hour we decided to pack it up and go looking for some serious waves.

Back to Yirell: Jermy, Greg, and I pumped up and headed out followed by Walter. I was pretty juiced on my 12m and we headed out to the outside break. The waves looked big from the beach, but when we got out there we were all a little chocked. These sets were over head high, and they were perfectly clean.

After a few hours of wave riding, and some flat-water fun on the inside, we called it a day.

Sorry to have led you astray

Sorry to have led you astray on that one... In general, do you think the waves are just better at Yirell, period?

Yirell

In my experience, it has always been better at Yirell.

The one caveat is that if the wind is NNE and the tide is very high, it could be a difficult launch in the wind shadow.

My other complaint there is

My other complaint there is when I try to ride the peeling waves, I feel like it takes me rather quickly into shallow rocks. Or am I just riding the wrong break?

The point break there will

The point break there will take you toward the shallow rocks (after all, its those rocks causing the waves to break). The past two days with the really big waves, they were breaking in much deeper water across the whole bay.

The outside break is really the best one, but you need to kite out of the bay, then upwind toward the 5-sisters. You'll see the break a few hundred yards off shore.
