Hurricane Bill Weekend
Friday afternoon the kickoff to the Hurricane Bill weeked started for me at 3:30pm at Revere Beach in a gusty SSW wind in mid-twenties. Finally I got to pump my 13 Waroo for the first time this season since selling my 08 Waroo. Any the winds were gusty into the twenties at Revere and there were a handful of people already out on the water. Myself, Nick, Zack, Allan, Joe, KJJ and a few others to mention. Most of us were on 10's thru 13 meter kites on hot day. I left work early to get some riding in. I was gonna head to Nahant for the SSW winds and shore swells from Bill but it seems that the masskiters were already set up at Revere. The conditions were on an outgoing unusually low tide in which later in the session we had a long walk back to the launch zone.
Saturday was a day spent mainly driving to the Cape in hopes of finding wind with the swells from Bill but no dice for wind on Saturday. I did manage to stop in Inland Sea Sport to rapp with Phil Mann and Todd and I picked up a seat harness for $40 (An older model). I figured it is time since I've had the same harness for 6 years anyways thanks for the bargain Phil. After that I decided to head home and got a call from skyrocket telling me that I might hit it at Revere for an afternoon delight. I got to Revere Beach around 4:30pm and the wind was kickin out of the ESE (onshore) with slight waves from Bill (not that big but long workable rides. This was the perfect set up for "kitesurfing". I pumped up my 17m Waroo (wind was in the upper teens to 20) I was overpowered fully sheeted in but I didn't care I just wanted to ride. We rode the entire legth of Revere Beach but I hung at the southern tip around the jetty area which makes for a nice point break ride when you have waves. I picked up my first wave at the state police baraks and rode one wave all the way to the southern end of the beach. The waves in this part of the beach are nice because they were breaking from left to right and were not a fast moving wave which gave me plenty of time to carve in back in on the lip and hit it again and again until I got to close. The lifeguards seemed to tolerate me because I was putting on quite a show. The jumps were the easiest when you have a shit load of power at your finger tips as I did. I was flying high for a big guy but the waves were sweet and the highlight of that day. A perfect way to end a day of chasing the wind.
Sunday - a day spent trying to find wind. Revere was dead but I met Skyrocket for a wave session at Nahant where the winds were around 14kts. Bruno Rosem was kickin it on a 12meter Royal and surf board strapless making the "bouys" (surfers) look really bad. Sky was the second to go out then me. Waves further out were well over my head at certain times but not closed off at all. This was a short session as the wind was dying off and I didn't want to get caught in the brown algae so I walked it in just as the wind died off.
Damn... I can't believe that Greg got another session in on Sunday!
Sounds like a pretty good weekend Skipper, despite the suckyness of Bill.
It was nothing like Race Point in Ptown!
I got some nice airs on the way out of Nahant Beach but kept getting pushed into the corner on the way back.
My final session ender came after a long tack out beyond the rocks on the far north end near the rotary. Let's just say the wind fell off on the way back and I had to body drag beyond the rock point, too close for comfort IMHO.
The waves at Nahant were more classic than at Ptown but Ptown had the wind and waves and the pro photographer and landing and launching life guard!
Kill Bill was farily decent after all! Looks like some nice NE this weekend too!
I agree with skipper, Revere really produced this weekend. Friday kicke a$$ with some great wind, a little gusty but I got 5 hrs of great riding.
Saturday afternoon presented water conditions which I've never seen. The low tide gave us some of the flatest water in between smooth rolling waves. The wind was a little light but it was so consistent you could simply let go of the bar and lay back. I want more!
I saw a bunch of kites at Revere when I was flying in from Texas at around 6:30 pm on Friday. Sounds like you guys had some really good sessions. I've been slacking from kiteboarding but hoping to join soon.
For me Friday was the pick of the litter. I had a great afternoon at South Beach in West Dennis with my daughter. She got up and riding and I was riding consistently up wind. Sunday the wind was suprisingly weak.
So, I worked all day Friday which was a bit of a mistake. Then, I casually hung out with the girlfriend and caught waves for the rest of the weekend including Monday. I got to Egypt Beach in Scituate a little late on Saturday, but the point was still breaking and I paddled into about a dozen head high plus long right handers. I couldn't believe how much water was moving around. The paddle out alone was over 200 yds.
Sunday I went to Nantasket, and it was similar size but this time beach break. Kind of a shit show with still a ton of water and the sidewalk lined with spectators.
Monday morning I got up at 4:45am for a little dawn patrol. Very cloudy but small and glassy- fun conditions.
I saw a guy put up a gigantic Naish at Scituate Saturday afternoon but it was way too light. Interesting to hear about the Revere situation and the lenient lifeguard. This fall is going to be ill. Looking forward to a better confluence of wind and waves.
