My research group at MIT is partnered with the National University of Singapore, so I am spending the month of January here working on our project and attending a seminar. I figured I would bring my kites, just in case I got to use them. Today was a perfect day, with winds in the mid-teens and bathwater temperature water.

I wasn't sure what the local scene would be in Singapore, but by mid afternoon there were probably 20 kites on the beach, as well as a bunch of windsurfers. Most everyone was one 12-14 meter kites, as the wind rarely gets above twenty from what the locals were saying. Got to talk to a bunch of locals, as well as expats from Germany, England, and South Africa. The guy from South Africa was just in Boston, and was asking me about kiting around the city. I told him to check out Masskite!

One of the cool things about the day was the variety of kites on the beach. People were riding Ozone, Cabrinha, Flysurfer, F-One, Liquid Force, Slingshot, Wainman, and I was on my Flexifoil. Made for an interesting day seeing all the different manufacturers in action.

I am hoping to get out a couple more times while I am here, and maybe make a day trip to Bin-Tan, Indonesia for some Lagoon kiting directly on the Equator.

I've kited there once in '08.

I've kited there once in '08. I'm surprised that there is that much beach on your pictures - I remember that the launch was kind of sketchy on this green plants between the palm trees. We also got visited by a police man who was not so delighted seeing us kite there... Changi Airport is right across the street. In any case, Singapore is a cool place!

Kiteboarding Singapore

Great session report!

Very cool to see places I have never been and realize that these people are out there every day. Also to realize that while we are going to Tugg Hill in the snow you are out in T-shirts in the same small world.

I've heard of waist harnesses

I've heard of waist harnesses and seat harnesses, but it seems like there's a chest harness in one of those pics?! Wink

Nice to read about this!
