Cabergoline is used to treat a variety of medical issues that arise when the hormone prolactin is produced in excess. It can be used to treat a variety of menstruation issues, as well as fertility issues in both men and women and pituitary prolactinomas (tumors of the pituitary gland).
It works by preventing the pituitary gland from producing and releasing prolactin hormone. When prolactin levels return to normal after 6 months, cabergoline is routinely withdrawn. If symptoms of too much prolactin reappear, it may be administered again.
